My class A training and testing was completed in an auto transmission truck. Not by choice - the city that I work for doesn't have any M/T trucks. Anyways, it looks like I'm facing a layoff in a couple of months and I'd like to have that restriction lifted. Suggestions?

Take the test in a manual transmission is the only way I know of.

I live in California. I know I can rent a truck for around $500.00 and go through the skills and road test...that's an option. What I don't know and would like to know is whether an outfit would hire me with my current class A and let me test in their equipment.

If you owned a company, would you hire someone to drive your trucks who was not licensed to drive it?

I am being practical. Not the least being the insurance angle.

The only thing to suggest is for you to contact the company and ask them, not people on here that have no clue if the company would consider it or not.

Are you saying you can double clutch shift -or not --cause even if you rent a truck with a manual shift to take the test you still have to be able to drive it. OH and double clutch it.

First off, have you ever driven a non synchronized transmission before? I would suggest paying for one on one training time with a instructor and truck at your local CDl school. Most allow you to pay by the hour. At AAA in philly its like 90 bucks and hour for truck and one one one instructor. You can then take the test in their truck and be done.

If you never driven a manual truck, your not gonna jump right in and be able to pass. You will need practice. Legaly you cant practice without an instructor because you cant drive a manual trans with your licence as is. Renting a truck is pretty much not gonna work. Check with your state DMV. You may need to get a new permit.

the other option is to sign on with a company that has auto trucks.
