Like most have posted,New york, the borroughs and Long Island can make for a long day driving.I drove out there for several years,on a daily basis. It's like anything else, once you get used to it,it's not that bad.It will take quite a few trips to learn the terrain.I will give you a short list on what I learned.
1.Tolls,they just went up,Verrazono went to $54.00,oneway for a 5 axle.The other bridges average about $27.00.
2.Tunnels and some smaller bridges have height restrictions, stay away from the tunnels unless your overall height is 12 foot.Same with the smaller bridges.
3.Stay off any roadway that says "parkway".You are not allowed on them and you will peel your trailer down to 10 feet from 13.6 feet if you get on one.Low over passes. The fine?About $500.00.
4.Roads?For the most part, up on the main roads or interstates they are doable but tight.
5.Restrictions vary.Haz-mat in some quantities are not allowed in some tunnels and on bridges. There are also rules regarding length and weight and where you can go and at what times in NYC.53 foot trailers for most part are not allowed.
5.Deliveries?If you can make your appointment at night ,do it,if not, give yourself time to be at your destination by 5.30 am or 6.00 am.
6.Where to shut down for the night? For the most part, unless your destination has a parking area,I would stay at one of the New Jersey Turnpikes services centers or at a truckstop in southern NY or northern NJ.
7.Crime?Never had a problem.Lock your tractor,lock your trailer.
8.Last but not least.NYC has underground utilities,no low wires, but they do have EL lines, elavated tracks on the side streets,be carefull when driving on the side streets.
The big deal about NEW YORK

NYC = TMS packed into too small of a space

That would have to be some stop light to get your load hijacked...some of the things people make up is so rediculous. I deliver in the bronx , manhatten , and the tenderloin in san fran...never had any issues. I wouldnt recommend going out for a stroll at night in these areas but just use common sense. The main thing you will need to watch are the low clearances....I usually go in at 3am or atleast before 5am before the traffic and the local delivery trucks clog everything up. It helps to know where you are going and map your route before hand and have a alternate route incase you miss a turn.

im from nyc and im here to tell you there is nothing wrong with nyc. its like any large fast moving city. you can go to any city and get your load jack big city or small city. and for the clearences, there all wrong with all the construction going on in all the boros the dot hasent changed the height clearences they are a little higher. i know cause i drive straight truck in nyc for 8yrs. in all 5 boros, and spoke to dot highway guys and they told me the heights are off. but they are fixing them they started with staten island i drive a straight job thats 14ft. in height. the traffic in manhattan sucks big time. but if your on long island or staten island ,brooklyn ,queens then your ok trust me

Doesn't the Van Wick Exp. aka I-678 have a low bridge on it? 11'6" I believe...
-
I think you are referring to I278 just past the Triborough bridge. If I remember correctly they exit all commercial vehicles over 12 feet high onto the surface streets for a block or 2 then your allowed to get back on.
