After 4 plus years in the trucking industry as a company driver, I'm finally considering becoming an O/O. The only reason I'm considering it is if I can be convinced my income will increase. I'm pretty content doing what I do now as a company driver. However, am exploring other options now that I've gotten some experience and understanding of the industry under my belt.
Here's the rub. I'm currently earning .46 cpm with benefits included in that amount. I ran some rough numbers on what it would take to run a truck down the road and come up with about .91 cpm. That amount plus my current .46 cpm as a company driver comes to $1.37 cpm.
All things being equal on my current miles run, can I really expect to earn more than $1.37 a mile running regionally on the west coast?
Any feedback is appreciated.
The Bottom Line...

Sit down & talk to Aaron and/or Rocky. Most of the guy I know that are leased to Thomas do better than $1.37. If you've been a good co. driver Aaron will help get you in a truck. I think it's a better place for an o/o than a co.driver.
Otherwise, local rates in OR & WA seem cheap to me. I believe I do better hauling intrastate in CA. You might do better up there with a maxi- a 40' & 20' or 4 axle trailer. Also, .91 seems a bit low to me for operating cost. You would have to operate very efficiently to do that.Scooter Jones Thanks this. -
You will not operate a truck for 91 cpm. Remember to factor in holidays, vacation pay in O/O pay package, and the fact not all miles generate revenue for an O/O. If you are making 46 cpm, getting holidays and a vacation, it would be hard to better that as a new O/O.

After further consideration and some cold water on my face I realize that owner oping just isn't for me. I'll be right at 70k this year with pay and benefits, home every week for 2 nights and a day and a half off and not a care in the world regarding maintaining and repairing the truck I drive out of my own pocket.
