Why do you to Owner Operator if you make less than minimum wage?
-
It has everything to do with control.... No one has control over me. No one tells me what I can or can not do. No one tells where to go. No one tells me that I can't go home. No one tells me that I've been home to long. no one tells me a #### thing....PainNdaNeck, Jason George and Logan76 Thank this. -
Owner operators would rather do their own thing and claim poverty than put up with some of the ridiculous company rules out there.
Ridiculous company rules could include;
a slow truck
turned down hp rating
anti idle policy
no pets allowed
no riders allowed
forced dispatch
lack of respect from office flunkies
forced routing (meaning you are "ordered" not to use certain highways)
told when you can go home and when you cannot
put up with bare bones specced trucks
and a host of other details/rules that drivers chafe underPainNdaNeck and Jason George Thank this. -
Your analogy lacks a little here. So you go OTR and are gone for weeks at a time and all your family hears is your voice?? I do understand what you are saying and you're right not all jobs fit everyone.
Everyone here is saying the same thing. Work hard, keep your record clean, keep at it and the better jobs will come your way. You can't expect to go right to the top out of school. I always suggest that you make a list of goals and where you want to be 1 year, 5 years, 10 years, and on to retirement. There's drivers out there that make real good money and have no benefits. So when it comes time to hang it up they have nothing. You need to look at all the aspects of the job.
If you have a family with young kids then maybe gasoline or any local 24 hour a day operation may be right for you. If you don't then maybe on the road for long periods is just right. The job should fit you and not anyone else. What's best for you and best in the long run is the ticket. It may take you some time to find what works for you but I'm sure you can ask anyone here on how they have had some really loser jobs. I know I have.
I do believe that if you get specialized that requires a company to train you above just driving then you become in demand. It cost that company money to teach you how to do the job and if you bring the training with you it's a plus for you. We all know experience is the biggest help but experience with a spotless record is gold. So it takes time and dedication to get to those 80K plus company jobs that set you up for life but they are out there. It's just a matter of how you go about getting there.rocknroll nik, Mattkujata and o.m.d. Thank this. -
