Congrats, DocFrank. Remember...there are NO dumb questions. Make sure your mentor is making you do everything you would have to do to run the truck solo. If he or she is in it for the miles you drive and not teaching you MAKE NOISE ABOUT IT. Otherwise when you go solo it will be a very tough road. The last week you should be calling the shots and the mentor should be along for the ride so you know that you have learned enough to run a truck solo for Swift. Try to master the qualcomm as it is your life blood on the road.
Be safe and enjoy!

My trainer-to-be, Caesar, called me. He seems like a nice guy; company driver, been a trainer 5 or 6 years he wasn't sure. He's Hispanic but that cool as yo hablo espanol, pero solemente la lingua del frontera. He's got an accent but it's one I grew up with so no problemo.
He said he was going to take some home time and we wouldn't leave out until Sunday and asked if that was O.K. with me. I take that as a good sign that he would be so considerate.
He's going to pick me up at my house in his car so that's also good as now I don't have to worry about where my car is parked and Karen can use it in an emergency.
I hope I do alright out there and believe me Mike, I am a real question asker. I completely agree with you when you say that this time is going to set me up for the rest of my career. -
Things to make sure you learn:
Scaling a load, including sliding tandems.
Fueling procedures.
How to get a shower from a T/S.
Believe it or not, my menter never did any of those things. We always fueled and shower at the terminal and his loads were all 14k feathers..... I actually had to ask other truckers once on my own. I'm sure that didn't help the Swift image....
Good Luck and safe miles!DocFrank Thanks this. -

Nerves are really firing up today. I keep going over everything I have packed and wondering if I'm bringing too much. I told Caesar what I had and he seemed fine with it tho he cautioned me that there isn't much room. This I know. I starting to worry that I'll be rusty in my shifting; its been two months almost since I got out of school and passed my test. I applied at Bill Hall,Jr. and did O.K. on my road test. Just backing got me and I went over what I did a thousand times until I realized where I went wrong. I think I could pass it now that I'm going with Swift. Hah! Isn't that always the way of it?
One thing I'm worried about is voting while I'm on the road. Down here in San Antonio we're having run-offs with early voting starting Monday. It's an important election and I don't want to miss out on putting my two cents in. It's my duty as a citizen.
How do other drivers handle stuff like this? Do I get voting forms sent to my home terminal or what?
As you can see I'm bouncing off the walls in anticipation and uncertainty about Sunday.

Here I sit in San Antone, waitin' for a ride to the future
My God the hours seem way too long from morning to midnight
And I'm callin' out to hear an echo
'cause I still don't have a ride
where's the people who'll remember
when nothin's left inside.
Waiting to hear from Caesar. Talked yesterday and he said he hadn't heard back from Keta and that he was waiting for a load. Also said it might be Monday before we head out. I am presently being overwhelmed with self-doubt and anxiety. Godfry Daniels I hate waiting!!! -
Hey Doc
Haven't had a chance to get on here in awhile but glad to hear you are on your way -or waiting to be on your way. Again, the life of a driver is hurry up and wait. Hard part is you are going to have to wait for your trainer to get something to get you or else you will just sit with him.
There was a good thread- a bit late now- but what you should bring for orientation/training since you are SHARING your trainer's truck.
BUT once you are out on your own again- great thread and I do believe it's in the newbie section and is docked so it stays up top- on what you will need once you are on your own.
Good luck and keep on posting!
Stay safe out there driver!!!!! -

I think I have what I need some but not too much, after all space is at a premium when you share someone else's home. I'm just ultra stressed about the whole thing self doubt and all that.
Be safe out there and Don't let the Minahunees get you!sammycat Thanks this. -
Hopefully I'll be gone today.
