Hi! I’m a middle aged man with two BAs and enough work/college experience to choke an elephant. My problem? I’m “overly qualified” to flip burgers! Yea, go figure right? I’ve worked almost every type of job there is and have enjoyed pretty much every single one - I’m a workaholic and have always enjoyed working. Period. Sadly, due to my blowing the whistle so to speak on a supervisor at my previous factory job and being “rewarded” with a not so gentle kick in the pants out the door, I’ve been unemployed for the last two years and my spirits all but shattered for it. I’ve got a small family (spouse and two pets) to take care of and my area has jack for those who are “overly qualified.” But, after watching a documentary about truckers who live out of their “pimped out” sleepers, I became curious if that might be a viable option for me and my family.
So, I suppose my question is this: Just what are the costs for a “pimped out” sleeper truck that can house two adults and two beasts of willing burden for, say, 5 years? I figured anywhere between 5-10 years of truck living and saving would suffice to at least save something for when I’m older, grayer and “wiser.” At least, that’s the dream anyway.
Is it even possible for something like this do be done? Any and all advice, tips, tricks and pickup sticks would be appreciated! Thank you!

Since you don't have a cdl yet; get one then hire on with a company that will let you take the wife and pets.
Many couples are doing this while driving company trucks.
The truck you're thinking of buying would be well over $200K.
    Where is your location?
Since you're unemployed, the state will pay for private cdl school.
Some companies allow 2 pets plus the wife. Most don't allow cats, but some do.
Some only allow 1 pet, but if they're small, can probably sneak two onboard.

I went from a negative net worth to a positive net worth of about 40k I think give or take, I am not sure of the exact figures. I have been team driving which really kicked up earnings as a first year driver and also was willing to load my own -30 degree trailer.

My own humble advice to you is to first humble yourself. You aren't going to be living in a "pimped out sleeper" your first year, or even your first few years. But the money is there and if you save and dedicate yourself, if that's what you really want you can have it.

I hear that some companies like Freymiller provide comfortable trucks.

Forget about the whistleblowing. Just focus on delivering your freight on time as much as possible while staying legal and keep a good relation with your dispatcher. They are your bread and butter when it comes to your paycheck.

But yeah after saying that, there's definitely money in trucking and you can have a piece of it with a good attitude, worth ethic, and modest expectations. The pimped out sleeper will be there if you want it. But probably not right away. It depends on your priorities.

U can buy a piece of land and dump a mobile home on it for half the cost that rig is gonna cost not to mention since u never drove its gonna cost u alot of money to learn this industry. Plus idk about you but even them big sleepers it still aint my bed at home . living on the road is not fun and will never be no matter how big ur sleeper is. What we do out here is work and no matter what sleeper u go back to we all deal with the same ######## day in and day out, if ya wanna learn the industry then get ur cdl and pay ur dues like everyone else did. But if u got that much money to buy a quatermillion dollar rig then ur money is best spent elsewhere. Just my opinion

Many company trucks are set up nice for driver comfort; refrigerators, APU for power while the truck is shut down, hookups for television/computer and some will already be equipped with television and Direct TV.
Which state do you live in? If not already, change your domicile to a tax free state so you can keep more of your paychecks. Three popular states for truckers are Texas, Florida, Nevada.

Nevada and Texas. Better location and too many crocodiles in FL. Besides Floridians just don't drive well. Texans don't really either, but at least we have plenty of room to fly off the freeway and slide around without hitting anything. That's why there are so many tire marks on the grass on the side of roads.

D Tibbitt has a valid point here? Why not just get a doublewide in rural Nevada(tax friendly area) with enough land to patk your rig on hometime & drive a Company rig on "their dime". No fuel expense, lease payments etc.Not trying to be a bummer,but...No CDL yet...are you sure youll like it? Just m o

Here's a "rent to own" in Las Vegas. www.rentown.net - Looks like plenty of room to park a 18 wheeler.

If you do join us on the road pls do not park on the fuel island. If you are only looking to pee or buy a drink pull forward to the yellow line and do that. Then go park or drive away.
