Any changes in pay or expectations in trucking are a reflection of the economy as a whole. The most distinguished career I've found in a big rig, a guy who used to be a plant manager and a VP who felt he was getting passed over because he was 50 ish.
Actually, trucking is one of the last employment refuges people can flee to. If this Mexican trucks program kicks into full gear, meet your competitors, the way American manufacturers have me theirs.
On the flip side, changes within the last 15 years or so:
Most solo drivers today get a condo
cell phones instead of calling cards and large banks of pay phones
Map Quest, email, your favorite websites...
Swiping your card at a fuel island
Not waiting around the fuel desk at the Pilot for them to call your name
Fast food at truck stops (I'm not paying for full service meals, drinks, taxes and tips)
No longer slinging the fuel hose under the truck
No dirt parking lots at Union 76
Pre pass and EZ pass when you can get it
CDs, MP3s, audible.com
I'm sure others can think of some.
The Federal Reserve, the 3 skyscrapers that collapsed instantaneously, symetrically and completely on 9/11, Hadji terrorists behind every bush, government control "for our protection"... Much going on.
The trump card is salvation in Jesus, it is greater than all our problems
Good one with the bravo sierra, btw! LOL
The dirty little secret(s) of trucking.

I dont know what is "used" to be like, but I tell you what, right now I make 400 bucks every 2 weeks as a state employee..so to me getting into trucking and making 300 to 400 bucks bring home a week..IS good money..thats the state of the economy Im afraid..
-
The park in NY where it started, the park in Tampa they have trashed and harrassed people at, one of the parks in northern Ca where they were just evicted from and attacked a few police officers, the college grounds that caused the latest blur on the news about the use of pepper spray... and that's off the top of my head, should I investigate the names and dates for you???
And... just because it is RUN as public property doesn't mean that the owwner doesn't untilmately have the final say on how it is used or abused, also, on said "public run land" by NY city ordinance (as well as many of the other cities they have chosen to illegally occupy) over night CAMPING is NOT allowed so either way they ARE breaking the law and as such should be removed, charged and arrested persuant to those laws.... Just because they say something enough doesn't make it true or a good idea!!!
But, enough politics, I do not want to be held responsible for this thread being locked....Politics has a place and this isn't it. Sorry Mods....Last edited: Nov 24, 2011
Lilbit Thanks this. -
The one that the previous poster claimed was, turned out to not be.
I really do not care either way. Just want the facts to be correct. -
There are 1000's of companies out here that are willing to pay you a decent wage. I'm talking $700 - $1400 (pre-tax) a week depending on the area you choose to drive in. OTR, Regional, etc. With ZERO experience.
Of course you will need training. And you will work at a reduced wage +/- 30% for the first few months. Just make sure you get those raises in a timely manner.
But DO NOT undersell yourself simply because of your economic position. Accepting ANY position, only insures you will remain in debt longer than is necessary.
ONE company that sticks out among all others in my mind is CRST. Avoid this company at ALL cost.
Nobody should drive OTR for less than $550 a week and stay out for weeks on end.....ever.
There are 2 primary types that are drawn to trucking. Those that enjoy the "lifestyle". And those who need a decent paying job that allows a certain amount of individual freedom while at work.
I too came into trucking in desperate times for me. I've remained here for many years since. And yes, I got my chops busted daily for the first 5 years or so.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with making a "desperate" move, when needed. Just don't crash the economic well being of those you'll be leaving behind, should you choose to leave when things get better in other fields you desire to work in.truckerdave1970 and BIGDADDYBEAR Thank this. -
Well honestly, if you don't care either way then I have better things to do with my time.
The part I DO care about is that they are breaking the law by camping over night and littering and should be made to move on. I'm all for peaceful and organized gathering, please be kind and clean up after yourself so others can enjoy the areas too!!!
Here's to hoping everyone had a safe and Happy Thanksgiving!! -
Kind of looks like if most of the people were around back in the 1770's we would have been very upset about them dumping the tea and all of the protests they were doing then.
I do not see where they are in parks, that it violates private property when it is not.
As far as their camping there, it is a right to protest.
Look back at the 60's.
It seems most want to eliminate their voice. Sad what the country is becoming. -
Power to the people man, power to the people!
