I remember Matlack buying PIE a couple of years before they went chapter 11 too.

Yup. I was working for PIE when that happened. They closed our terminal and told us we could apply for Matlack jobs elsewhere if we wanted to come in at the bottom of their seniority list. Very few guys applied.

Is this the same PIE that bought Ryder Truck Line (RTL) back in the 80's? My grandfather drove for RTL and retired within months of PIE buying them. I was just a young teenager when that happened so I don't know much about PIE.

What you described happening to you with Matlack buying PIE is the same thing that happened when PIE purchased RTL. My grandfather was told he could work out of the Birmingham terminal (4 hour drive). He didn't want to move closer to Birmingham and he was old enough to retire, so he gave them the keys for good.

In the late 70’s my dad started work for a company out of Florence, Al called Chem-Haulers and then they were bought by Saunders Leasing out of Birmingham and called Saunders Carriers then Ryder purchased them and became Ryder Bulk Carriers. They were sold to Trimac in about 1990. Later left and went to Redwing Carriers then they merged with DSI and dang if they didn’t get bought by Trimac around 2000.

I think the way it worked was that the PIE freight division and Ryder merged. I'm not sure who bought out who. The whole thing was owned by some holding company .
