This whole thing reminds me of Bird Flu, Swine Flu, SARS, Mad Cow, etc.
Yes, it has a higher mortality rate. This does not mean to panic, just stay smart and be hygienic. If you are susceptible to infection and have a weakened immune system, like any other bugs going around you should take measures to safeguard yourself.
There are currently 129,829 reported cases in the world. The global population is 7.8 billion people. That is an 0.0016% infection rate.
Of those 129,829 reported cases, 68,672 people have recovered. There have been 4,751 reported deaths. That is 0.00006% of the global population.
In the United States, as of today there are 1,289 reported cases. This does not include people who have recovered. Of those 1,289 cases, there have been 37 deaths. The United States population is 327.2 million. That is 0.00001% of the US population.
The 2019-202 flu season from October 1st 2019 through February 29th, 2020 saw an estimated 20,000-52,000 deaths. The flu killed between 0.006% -0.015% of the US population in 4 months. The coronavirus lead to 37 US deaths in two weeks. At a sustained rate, it will lead to fewer than 300 deaths in the same timespan, which would be approximately 0.00009% of the US population when it is all said and done.
Even if there is an outbreak, it has to get MUCH worse than things currently are before people should start buggin' out.otherhalftw, slim6596, classic_150 and 5 others Thank this. -

https://www.sciencealert.com/the-ne...he-flu-but-they-have-one-big-thing-in-common;
'coronavirus, proves deadly in around 3.5 percent of confirmed cases."
"it is significantly higher than seasonal flu, which typically kills 0.1 percent of patients"
"There is still considerable uncertainty around the fatality rates of COVID-19 and it likely varies depending on the quality of local healthcare," said Francois Balloux, Professor of Computational Systems Biology at University College London.
"That said, it is around two percent on average, which is about 20 times higher than for the seasonal flu lineages currently in circulation."
Contagiousness
Disease experts estimate that each COVID-19 sufferer infects between two to 3 others.
That's a reproduction rate up to twice as high as seasonal flu, which typically infects 1.3 new people for each patient.Dino soar, Dennixx, Rideandrepair and 3 others Thank this. -
