Another good one to watch for are those darn bridges/underpass/overpass areas that say 13' 6" for one lane BUT the next lane over which I happen to be cruising down suddenly has a sign saying it's only 12' 9"... needless to say, the first time I had that little experience made my heart stop but it started again when I was able to stop in time.

Good God man, I know that too. I was like John Candy in Planes, trains and automobiles and I too nearly bent my steering wheel when I came up on an over-pass marked low!

To the O/P, I have been to Brooklyn, Bronx and Queens all in the same day. In Bronx, I saw a "queen", ugly as all heck, for a guy too. But get yourself a city map if you can. I do not know if I would trust a GPS in either Boro, as since I do downtown Boston? It is NEVER correct there either!

Get explicit directions, sometimes the BEST directions come form the people you are going to pick up at, or deliver to, as they really want thier stuff!

Yep, as Moving Forward mentioned, some lanes have lower clearance. Stay in the middle and you'll be safe. You still gotta pay attention to signs, even if they're wrong. I'm in Jersey City a lot, and often take 95 N into CT. Long Island wasn't that bad, at least where I was going. Study Google Maps and learn your expressways, how they connect, and what bridges will take you where.

Above and beyond, prepare ahead of time by studying your maps - Google satellite and street view are huge helps. And, stay calm. Don't let anybody get you in a hurry.

haha! I always avoid that inside lane going through downtown anyway, but I've personally witnessed 13'6" trailers in it without hitting anything.

there are many overhead clearances along designated truck routes in NYC that are not high enough to clear a 13'6" trailer. Absolutely DONT assume you're safe just because you're on a truck route.

Thats about all you can say. I bumped docks in BK and Queens for a bit and a 12'6" trailer or straight job is really the right tool for that job. That extra foot will allow passage under most any overhead clearance you'll come across that would snag a 13'6" and will keep you out of the wires too.
