With the Volvo's, esp the newer ones, they have an electric fifth wheel release. You have to flip the switch with the tractor breaks set otherwise it won't release.

I had the same problem you had, and one of the old hands showed me how to do it. You can also manually pull the fifth wheel release handle, just make sure the little notch is sitting on the outside of the plate to allow full release... If that makes any sense lol.

I would think it would depend on the brand of fifth wheel. Fontaine usually has the easiest pull, particularly the 6000 model. I've never liked a Holland fifth wheel, ask the garage what brand is on the tractors. Just curious.

That's a good point the Volvos at GFS I swear have different fifth wheel then the corn binders.
I think the fifth wheels may very well be Holland but I'll have to look again. Not all trucks are bad the last corn binder I had was fairly easy to pull. My new corn binder the pin is very hard and I may have to hook a chain to a tractor to pull the pin haha just kidding.

well, started new job with delivering millwork (windows, doors, moulding). local, close to home, less pay but less BS (and smaller division within big company). All brand new equipment

First day, get in brand new peterbuilt city tractor (337? single axle, little thing, cute), 50 miles on odometer with boss for check ride.

Get fuel, start it back up again. "stop engine immediately" light comes on, warning buzzers, etc.
    Sure enough, broke down.

    kinda ironic

I think what you just described I did this week I'm good for missing a gear at least once a day. I know for a fact late last week or early this week I can't remember I stalled out a truck haven't done that in a little while, but I know recently I've done it. I've been driving the Volvo's past 3 working days which is a rarity for me (even though our fleet is 97% Volvo) the Volvo's I will say this are nicer to drive then the Internationals, bigger nicer cabs way more creature comforts turning radius isn't as good, but the mirrors are better to see out of and all that good stuff. I got to drive a new Volvo today and it was like driving a Cadillac.

    Anyhow Fun Times.
Lets see people are still eating around here yes they are, yesterday I had my Monday which was a real Monday running back and fourth across down town must have crossed down town 2-3 times yesterday. Actually my Monday route yesterday was set up better then the previous Monday, today Tuesday wasn't that bad 616 cases, it all came off pretty good. Got back to the yard a hair before 3 thought I was going to be one of the last back, but nope half the yard was still out on the road. So that was good, hopefully tomorrow works out good as well, past couple of Wednesday's haven't been to to bad.

A couple of the guys at my yard for GFS used to deliver lumber and mill work. They said usually the cabinets and windows and stuff were put in a 28' trailer and the lumber was either on a flat bed truck or if it was like ply wood and stuff they would load it on to a flat bed straight truck and then literally dump it in the street in front of where ever. My aunt works for a big company that makes building supplies and has there own truck fleet and I asked her about working for them, but ehh not right now.
