The hazards of funk...

    Since recently joining this forum, I've noticed an unsurprising theme...unsafe trucks. Whether due to exhaust issues, bad tires, lights...or, just as common, driver grunge. I'm curious about something...how do companies deal with "driver funk" issues vs. truck issues?
    I know bad tires are dangerous. I also know burnt lights, cracked windshields and worn springs can cause problems. I'm also aware that the sweaty, gooey "stuff" that some people exude is just as dangerous to our health. As is second-hand smoke. So why do companies allow their drivers to wallow in their filth so freely and not have them booted back to whatever hole they call home as soon as a truck rolls through service that requires a haz-mat suit to enter?
    I've just read a couple posts that, while amusingly written, are also enough to make me cringe. I'm in the market for an OTR company, but require training to upgrade from class B to class A...and I am NOT looking forward to being stuffed into a rolling sardine can with a NO class trainer. Will it happen that way? Maybe...heck, maybe *I* will be the one with "no class"...But after the posts I've read, I'm glad someone stepped up and said something...if not to the companies, at least to the general public. Because if I get stuck in a similar situation where it's a world of pee bottles and butt cheese...I'm calling the company and refusing to go any further until I get a cleaner trainer, for my own health, if nothing else. I realize that I'll miss an opportunity to share a great (if not traumatic) story, but I think I can cope. I worked on construction sites that had port-a-johns that made my eyes water and sinuses burn...but that was only for a brief moment. I can't imagine riding for days or WEEKS on end with that stench...I'd have no sinuses left!!!
    In the meantime, I'll pray for a non-smoking trainer (RIIIGHT), that doesn't pee in his/her truck or pants, USES the little shower coupons on a regular (semi-annual does NOT count as regular) basis...and someone that's PATIENT and doesn't think that because I'm training, that I need to be yelled at... And stuff. :biggrin_25523: Hopefully that won't require divine intervention...?

    You will be paired with a trainer based on smoking preferences at most companies. However, when you are assigned a truck, it may have been a smoker's truck previously. Or it may have been pissed in. I've had both over the course of my career, and I would rather have the smoker's truck- it cleans up better!

    I'm a little ocd when it comes to a clean truck. Hell, I have my ProStar carpeted out. This is my home 25-26 days out of the month. I want to make it as comfortable as possible. I'm amazed when I see the inside of trucks, and there is so much garbage on the dash that you cannot see the bottom of the dash. Or, dirt, mud, trash all over the floor. Not sure how anyone can live comfortably like that.

    I'm pretty sure there is such a thing as truck hoarders. Hmmm, might make a good tv show idea.

    Try to make your decision at the yard otherwise you will be on I80 at a Pilot with all your stuff if you call the company and complain about the driver. Bubbas dont take kindly to anyone remarking about their buttcheese.

    Trainers should have regular inspections of their trucks for cleanliness in my opinion. You want to let a slob drive for the company fine, but don't let that slob represent the company to a new trainee.

    Driver funk is the main reason I prefer to be self employed. Slip seating is a danger to your health- or not, if you're the problem driver I'm talking about. Some drivers have well tested immune systems- the rest of us have to lay in, sit in and be surrounded by the after effects. Without getting too colorful, there are reasons why one driver wouldn't want to lay on a mattress that another driver has entertained a few lot lizards on.

    As a former smoker, I don't want to breathe stale smoke odors 24/7- and in one company truck I found a stinky "panty collection" stuffed under the mattress of the top bunk.

    The thought of having sex with a fat, greasy, dirty driver is slightly more disgusting than the mattress he used for a few months- you know, the one you're laying on? You're also sitting in his seat...(let your imagination loose on this one).

    I once told a terminal manager that slip seating is just like two grown men stripping naked- and exchanging under shorts. (You put on his and he wears yours for the rest of the day).

    Yes People- it IS that disgusting.

    That is one of the things I liked about TMC, for the first 14 or so years I worked there. Trucks were clean, and kept that way. If one was issued to you that wasn't clean, tell the shop foreman, it would be before it became yours. The last couple trucks I got before I left, not so much. Really annoyed me to be issued a dirty truck. When coming to this new company, that is one thing i really worried about....getting a filthy truck. Got lucky, and got a new one though. And I will keep it clean enough the next guy won't fear for his health when he gets it after me.
