About a week or so ago, I was pulling an oversized. I was 550 miles from my destination. Sun was setting and I grabbed a parking spot at a full service truckstop. Checked the weather and a storm was going to hit the next morning right about the time I would be getting started and end about 9pm. The day after was to be sunny and clear but below zero. I decided to sit it out.

Early the next morning, it starts to rain. Suddenly, the temps drop from 40 to -3. Bigroad gets shut down and trucks park everywhere they can. 9pm the skies clear. I get up the next morning, wait until sunrise and hammer out. The truck stop lot is jam packed and the road is virtually empty. The f

What's wrong with this picture? Weather clears 10 hours before sunrise, roads are clear and open...why is the parking lot filled to capacity? How do you guys expect to make money when you're sitting in truckstop with the sun up and the roads clear?

So, this one is for the people that want to make money:

    1. Keep your eye on the weather. If there's a monster storm heading your way, bet on the road getting closed. Time your 10 hour break or even a 34 around the bad weather.
    2. If you're below a half tank, top off the tank. If you hear reports or see signs that the road is closed ahead, top off your fuel tanks.
    3. I don't know anything about DEF, other that it freezes at the fuel pumps, so carry at least 2 gallons inside your cab.
    4. Be ready to move. Don't be watching movies, or doing laundry or getting a PM service done if you're waiting for bad weather to break. Bad weather ends, give the salt shakers and plows a couple hours to work and then head out. If you're watching, you will see trucks moving (well, the guys who make money), so move with them.
I know that most of you are solar powered, but if the weather breaks at night and another storm is coming a day or so behind, you need to do your best to be able to run wth the vampires. I'm not saying a full 11 like the vampires, but AT LEAST 400 miles.

    Were you in Ohio, perchance?

eLogs has a lot to do with many of them not being able to roll early, but not all of them. Agreed to the post. In winter, get while the getting is good and you have hours. Period. Winter Wx events tend to change rapidly and cause rapid changes in road conditions, for the good and for the bad.

Oversize guy yapping about how other guys won't run at night so he can get a spot- just sayin! Why do you need paper logs any way? I suppose it's when it takes you 3 hours to figure out how to get a large machine out of park to drive it up on your trailer LOL.

^^^^ Yep, sure have. I used to do it in the off-season of asphalt. I almost got a ticket for having my "oversized" sign upside down ... but when I told the cop I was paying a tribute to Dezi he only gave me a warning. I respect the HELL outta them guys; I'll stick to my tanks, thanks.
And yeah.... it was ##### good money, lemme tell ya. I took a step back to my comfort zone.

Just having some fun. Tired of old timers talking about "real men" and all that. Started trucking for my dad when I was 22 and now I'm 42 but still don't consider myself a know it all old timer. Dads gonna be 70 in a month and still flatbedding - takes those loads to nyc that nobody wants-whatever. He doesn't act like a know it all big rigger either. People bragging about driving heavy equip onto a trailer LOL. How would you know how to do it without asking?

P.s. I've always though the heavy haul stuff was impressive but come on- why be an arrogant so and so. Reminds me of Harley riders bragging about their slow $$$ bikes.
