One of the worst managed process I have seen in Government. And that is saying something.

Called about this last week and was told that this was a thing of the past. Now I am hearing it is in fact brought back and they have information on published on it.

Abused, really? Have to believe managing this cost more than they generate.

With the old sticker, they would issue a citation for not following instructions and placing it on the side.

Fuel taxes are a state issue, as are any additional taxes, such as the NY Highway Use Tax. The Feds cannot stop the states, as it is a Constitutional Right for the states to impose their own taxes.

No, they can not legally stop them from collecting the taxes or anything else. They can however negotiate the stickers away, with the states, like they did before, think back when we had stickers all over the place, back then they said that it couldn't be done, but they got it done, and it has worked well until recently with the pollution stickers for the engines that California required on the hood, then New York City, now New York State. What I don't understand is, if Kentucky, New Mexico, and Oregon, can tie this information to the license plate and make it work, why can't New York? Every time you are pulled over they run your plate. Maybe they just need to make the fines extremely high to eliminate this, in the old days in New York State it was $100 for the tractor and $100 for the trailer if they caught you with out it, (HUT Stickers), and even then we had carriers using that as a cost of doing business rather than get properly permitted. Why not make it five thousand bucks on the tractor and five thousand for the trailer, and do away with the stickers, save the printing and mailing fees, and make more per violation for the state. There has got to be a better system than going back to that, but then, that would require some "thought" on the part of the state officials. These carriers that are always trying to game the system are continually making life harder on the carriers that are trying to comply, maybe it is time to just ban them from commerce in that state when they are caught improperly permitted, anyone with a computer is able to find the requirements for any given state, so there really is no excuse to not have all the credentials, unless you are gaming the system.

I talked to NY State today.
They are getting a TON of calls/complaints about this since no one really has much room on our style of trucks.
Under the headlight area (as I had thought) is not acceptible.

So, the lady told me to do this:

-Take a picture of the front and side of your rig.
-Compose a letter outlining why you cannot mount the sticker on the front.

Send these along with your name/number to:

    NY STATE TAXATION
    ATTN: TAX PAYER GUIDENCE
    WA HARRIMAN CAMPUS
    ALBANY NY 12227

Once they process your letter, they will review it and if appropriate will permit you to mount it on the driver side near IFTA.

...I told her that placement near the IFTA would be much more universally accepted and they are evaluating that already.

WHY DO PEOPLE HAVE TO ALWAYS REINVENT THE WHEEL?

So do you think they will reply to you request sometime this year? If they don't reply then what? I think you better send that letter certified mail so that you have proof you sent it, and that it was received. But of course that will add to your expense!
