I agree there should be some training more training involved, beyond simply getting your CDL and then headed right down the road without a trainer for a least a week or two maybe more. I am a complete rookie, got my CDL back in April, and have been driving semi since then, without a trainer. I did myself a disservice by not having a trainer. I did not go to a CDL school. I read the book from the local BMV, took the written tests, then borrowed a friends truck and him. We practiced manuevering, backing, etc for about 3 weeks before I took my test, and passed. I now operate a freightliner classic, hauling a 35ton tri-axle RGN on a daily basis, hauling heavy equipment in 4 states surrounding me. Some wide, and some heavy. I have yet to back into another truck, person or anything else for that matter. Havent had any issues with OOS. Im the one that set the company I work for up with DOT#, MC #, Insurance, IFTA, KYU, IRP, etc. I also managed to almost pass the new entrant safety audit. The compnay failed, primarily because the owner of the company who is also a new driver insisted that he didnt need any paperwork on file for driver qualifications; and also didnt realize that vehicles with internal combustion engines were hazmat, therefor requiring 1mil insurace. we had 3/4 mil. Was it easy when I started, however I did it. I do wish I had had a trainer or someone to help me with the steep learning curve of load securement, log books, etc. I did at least have access to my dad, who was always just a phone call away when it came to problems that popped up. This year, I should take home just shy of 40k. Unfortunately the carrier that I work for doesnt believe in pay increases, so if I stay here I will prbly make the same next year. Right now im accepting the lower pay for experience hauling expecially with an RGN. In a year or two I will find a better carrier to work for hopefully also hauling either RGN or flat. sorry for the long post.

I am not saying that I do not want to spend time with a trainer, I have to think everyone should do that. I simply want to spend the least amount of time possible with a trainer. The idea being that I am very independent and do not like "sharing" space. Very particular that way.

I think many of us feel that way, but that's not the point. This isn't a four-wheeler you'll be driving. Its quite a bit different, and the time you spend with a trainer (a good trainer - be picky) is well justified. Constructive criticism of your driving technique while you are performing is something that is invaluable. It may keep you from making a tragic mistake some day.
