The real truth about lumper fees.

in my (limited) experience, if a place has lumpers, the load is probably sort/segregate

And not to mention whomever unloads the trailer is expected to do pallet inspections for the receiver and re-stack any pallets they consider to be unacceptable before they'll receive the product.

Bummers when a cheapo shipper puts the whole load on bad pallets making an easy unload a pain in the buttox.

There are also receivers who will require the unloader to shrink wrap the products stacked on ALL received pallets before they'll accept the load.

I've been to receiving facilities where I decided to unload the trailer myself, only to discover there's no cooperation from the dock workers. They lag behind in providing empty pallets and don't move the stacked pallets in a timely manner which wastes a driver's time. Then there's the wait for the checker to count the product and deliver the paperwork to the office where they take their sweet time signing it.

Same facility, and with basically the same load of product WITH a lumper hired and it goes a LOT smoother. About 4 to 5 hours without a lumper and about 2 hours with a lumper. No doubt they're in cahoots, and the dock workers might even be getting kick-backs from the lumpers.

Can't live with 'em and can't live without 'em.

 

you want to stay healthy un-loading freight get a job at shaffer trucking out of new kingstown pa.you unload 3000 pcs. floor load they want to pay you @40.00 i worked there 8yrs. and i had to unload a lot of floor loads.i hurt my back and the dr,s said no more un-loading soooo they fired me. BUT that was the best thing that ever happened ( thank you shaffer ), i sued them and got a LOT of money ha ha ha retired now doing real well. hang in there drivers. all is good unite fight DO NOT UNLOAD FREIGHT, its not a driver responsability. woodstock

 

Haul moo cows and root hogs...
They walk on and off. They rock you gently when you do pull over to sleep,
Others don't park too close against you, most stockyards or feedlots are able to receive 24/7.
All in all, not a bad way to go. May get a "rep" for being "fast", but somebody's gotta be in front.

 

i never hauled live animals, i had a friend that did she said, she would sing to them and they would walk off lol lol, she got a case of tonsilities, ha ha had to beat them off, i hauled a lot of boxed meat and that is a real mans job, a floor load of boxed meat 800 cases and all differant weights had a reciever in jersey demanded i sort the boxes by weight ha ha we had a fight of fights, needless to say i won, dam that floor load buisness anyway,a lot of grocery warehouses are demanding to have it put on small pallets, sorted for the out going on thier trailers, it should NOT be a drivers responsability to unload any way, so i hooked up with a company, that did not require a driver to unload, and loved it. i am retired now and i never thought i would say it but i miss the over the road, but not all the bull **** that goes with it, well i spoke my peace you have a great day whereever you may travel and above all be safe WOODSTOCK

 

Cattle:You open the gates, they will stomp you getting off.
Hogs: Takes a little prodding but once moving it's like a stream.
Now SHEEP: No go. Grab one and hurl him down tne chute. He beats you back in and to the nose of the load. Cuss and grab. Wise up. Go ask the yard man if he has a "judas" goat. Get the goat, send him up the chute, let him mingle, walk out and they follow like he was Mary..

Boxed meat: I delivered meat for a packer once. Quarters of beef (sharp bones) and 100 lb boxes of frozen boneless bull meat for the taco trade quickly move me to flatbed cotton.

But then, we were driving for $75.00 wk flat plus expenses flatbed and $.05 (nickel) a loaded mile on the cattle. Wasn't really encouragement to drive it there and then unload it.

 

You forgot to mention the part about DOT doesn't want your truck in their clean inspection bays either.

Ah, sweet memories. Pre US DOT.... Back then it was the ICC...
Agricultural products (livestock-grain-bagged seed and fertilizer and produce) were all EXEMPT products.
No ICC rights needed to haul, no log book to keep. Just don't bounce the state scale man's beam too hard and all was well.
Buy enought fuel in a state to run it or pay the tax when he stuck your tanks at the scales if you did not have a ticket to show him.
Since we nearly always ran "heavy" the weight and fuel tickets were not a big thing. Used to run Haines City, FL to Min/St Paul and never see a set.

A couple of years ago I viewed the rear of the I55 AR scales from the main drag (US 70) thru W. Memphis, about 150' away. Had a flat bed with 2 forklifts on it. Looked like a ginner on his way back to Earle, AR via the old road.

 

krogers !!! oh! my what a rotten place to go thats why i NEVER shop there,kroger meat warehouse in indianapolis is a total scam the lumpers are the night shift personell,looking for a fast buck, i have been to almost all the grocery houses in the country,marsh super markets ran me over with a fork lift in indpls, the ins. paid me well, had to sign paper work not to tell the amount, glad i am retired and don,t have to go to them anymoer, i miss the road not the grocery warehouses,lol lol well be safe drivers, have a super day woodstock
