With the advent & proliferation of GPS, I don't think there's a necessity for wiring the highways. Combining electronic comms and visual data should give enough accuracy for road use, although I could see maybe needing a differential GPS setup in areas of poor sat reception & heavy congestion.

It will all be gps and sensors on each vehicle. Maybe sensors at all intersections tied into traffic lights and signs
For better control there. The roads will all be the same. The only problem is going to be how the gubment is going to overreach and outlaw any vehicle that doesnt have the tech built in.Rideandrepair, The_vett and Hammer166 Thank this. -
i forsee severe weather throwing a monkey wrench into those plans not to mention $$$$$ . Now if we were doing it for Ukraine, hell it would already be done.Rideandrepair, SmallPackage and hope not dumb twucker Thank this.

Quite frankly, without derailing this completely into politics, any mandate along those lines would be, like almost everything else the govt currently does, be far outside the province of the federal government. Not that it will stop them.Rideandrepair, broke down plumber, wis bang and 1 other person Thank this.

That won't work everywhere. tall objects; mountains, skyscrapers, etc. can block satellite signals and a horde of interrupted GPS signals, even momentarily, would mess up the simplest congestion without each auto having a surface location so the roadways need to be intelligent too.
Think about a NYC taxi squirming through rush hour changing lanes charging through the crowd, how would GPS protect the other hundreds of vehicle in the taxi's path?broke down plumber and SmallPackage Thank this. -
Yup.
That's why I mentioned the 'lowest bidder' referring to the sterling performance of the low bidder system building the interstates.
How many were rebuilt early?
Who remembers I-287 in NJ where the concrete road surface sank at every overpass 'cause it wasn't thick enough to take the impact of traffic coming off the bridge structure.
Gonna cost us taxpayers a lot!broke down plumber Thanks this. -
Try driving literally anywhere in BC, Canada. No cell coverage for hours at a time and forget trying to listen to a song on satellite radio without losing signal every couple minutes.broke down plumber Thanks this.
