Anything over $10 is taxed at 20% and you made $20

Now the falsehood is thinking that you'll be taxed $4 (20%) for that whole $20.

In reality you'll be taxed 10% on the first $10 and 20% on the anything over the first $10
10% on $10 = $1
20% on the NEXT $10 = $2

So you paid $3 in taxes not the $4 that some believe.

This is correct. It is a progressive tax. You only get taxed the percentage of each bracket, not that bracket's tax rate on all of your income.
