I just graduated form my local college's Driver Training Program, during training we were encouraged to look and apply for employment with companies who would finish our training and give us a job. We had several different recuriters come by and tell us what they had to offer. I chose Swift since they had what I was looking for. After filling out their application and giving it to the recruiter it seemed like everything was a green light. I called at the start of each week to see how things were setting up, where I was told each time that things were in place and I should be reporting to Oklahoma City on the 23rd. I had never received anything from Swift so I called Monday as I usually do and left a message which was not returned, so now I sent 2 emails which were also not answered. I finally got my instructer to call on the day before graduation, well the recruiter answered his call. My application was denied due to a car crash I was involved in. the crash occured in 1979 (31 years ago) when I was 19. I had a good friend loose his life in the crash and I was charged with Negligent Homicide a misdemeanor charge, I served 1 year probation. It was a freak crash caused by a front wheel blow out, there was no alcohol involved, and I have never had any alcohol charges of any kind EVER. I even told Swift about it on my application. I know that companies have their requirements and I really have no issue with Swift for not hiring me, it is the way that I was lead on to believe that I was going to have a position with them and then pull the rug waiting to the last moment to let me know. Now here I sit with a CDL and no job. I really can't understand where they are coming from I was able to pass a background check to get my HAZMAT. Does anyone of you good folks here have any advice? Any suggestion would greatly be appreciated.

I tell people get as many prehires as you can. Even with companies you don't think you want to work for.
I had a mistake on my MVR cost me a job at Werner. Court system in TN screwed it up. I got it fixed Werner still turned me down.
I only applied at 3 companies at first. I never followed up on one, got turned down by another.

I have had 2 license suspensions in my life.'83 due to the state thinking I didn't have car insurance. Got that cleared up. Then I had 2 tickets one in '89 and one in '90. They were over 12 months apart. I took "flunky driver education" defensive driving school to keep the points off my license and not report it to the insurance company. Can't take it if the tickets are less than 12 months apart. It was 16-18 months. I got it reinstated with a phone call.
I put those on every application. If I didn't they might have found them.

Start looking local my friend. I have put ads in truck paper, craigslist, and have put apps for local delivery jobs such as Cocoa Cola, and the likes.

There is a huge difference between criminally negligent homicide and a car crash. Criminally negligent homicide is causing a death by dangerous driving. I'm pretty sure, at least at some point in the past, the original poster is exactly the kind of person trucking companies do not want on the road. Criminally negligent homicide is a big deal. It is a bigger deal than a DUI, and we see posts on this board daily from people that can't find work, and should not be able to work, with a DUI on there record.
Most misdemeanors can be expunged.Last edited: Feb 6, 2010
