Yeah Volvo owns Mack. But that don't mean they are one and the same!

Was, sold my truck back in August last year. Been "chomping at the bit" to get back in my own for a while now. Need some more experience in the patch before I do that yet. Gotta see some ups and downs to get a good idea on how it works in fluid hauling.

I've only seen truck mounted pumps up here so far. The trailers are all provided by the big company so I'm thinking the pumps are truck mounted as we are not usually pulling the same trailer for very long. Plus they have a lot of trailers that get switched out whenever something breaks on it or it needs to go in the shop for whatever reason.
There's not many independent carriers up here in my area with their own truck and trailer, it all seems to be power only contractors pulling around the big companies trailers. I guess also if they require truck mounted pumps then the cost and maintenance is the responsibility of the truck owner not the big company.

i can see the benefit to to a company leasing trailers to want the o/o to have the pumps on there tractor so that the o/o is paying for the wear and tear on the pumps. i like the pumps on the trailer. that way no need to be carrying around a crude pump when you're hauling water or the other way around. also if for a day your doing something besides pulling tank maybe yanking a flat bed or something you don't have all them pumps hanging off your tractor.

the only ones you see around here 99% of the time with there pumps mounted on there tractors are the pneumatic tank haulers. and you will see a water hauler once in a while with a mas-port vac pump mounted on there tractor.

i like everything that goes to each trailer attached to the trailer. leaves your truck cleaner and less cluttered and when you switch to a different trailer you just plug everything in and everything that goes with that trailer is on that trailer and not everything that doesn't.

like with my truck the only thing attached to my truck is the 2 line wet kit, plug in for belly dump controls and plug in for side dump controls. so the only thing im carrying on my truck that i don't always need is just the wet kit itself. and with that if i wanted to i could even go back to tanks if i wanted and if i had a tanker with a trailer mounted pump i could easily switch between all three without a issue.

That definitely makes the tractor a more versatile unit by having the pumps on the trailers and just the wet kit on the tractor. With these trucks here it would not really be suitable to go pulling other types of trailers with the pump and hoses on the catwalk like they are. They are kind of restricted to what they can do with the pump mounted back there behind the cab. Also a lot are under-slung pumps mounted to the frame rail under the catwalk with the hoses coming off fittings protruding out the deckplate and the suction line comes into the pump in front of the fuel tank. Gotta be really careful of ground clearance in deep ruts or can damage the pump. The direct PTO driven pumps are limited in there mounting positions to mostly under-slung mounting but the hydro operated pumps have more flexibility in positioning and are normally mounted up on the deck plate behind the cab. Still takes up a lot of room behind the cab of a sleeper truck with a Canadian 244 inch wheelbase.
