Good point. I would do the same and have been known to go "overboard".

What's a headache rack?! It's that thing that goes in front of my bumper, right?!

If it hits the headache rack it’s too late. Some people still think they are useful for more than storage, and looks. Unless it’s thick steel it’s not stopping most loads from coming to visit the driver in an emergency situation.

    Lepton1 and daf105paccar Thank this.

Looks like a rack helped this guy out. I wonder how much further that coil would have made it if something didn't slow it down. I doubt that plastic berth would have done anything at all.

  6. I still see some shippers require the head ache rack or they won't load you. and no I don't have a list of who I pulled for who said have it or no loading.

I see that on occasion to. I've even seen a reciever refuse to unload a truck over it.

While i have no illusions my aluminum box is gonna keep me safe from a load of steel beams, i can not fathom running open deck without a headache rack. Where the heck are you suppose to keep all your stuff? And don't say boxes on the trailer. I got two 60x24x24 boxes on the trailer packed full. passenger side step box under the door, both side boxes under the bunk, a saddle box on the frame of the truck packed AND my cabinet style headache rack is a solid 5 ft tall 7 feet wide and 18 inches deep and you couldn't fit another item in there with a shoe horn. My empty weight would probably go down 3k if i didn't carry so much junk.

Same page, friend. I don't usually pull out the bible either, because like you, I'm not looking for law, but principle.

I do understand why they have that law. On a stretch load, the sheer size of the load, not the weight will rip securement apart as the trailer flexes. The header board rule covers for the size. The WLL covers for the weight.

Speaking of size and weight...saw a Bennett trailer, Rgn with a 30 ft deck, 4 axle spread steerable, with a 20 ft deck insert and a 2 axle jeep. That would be right up my alley. Bennett dropped it off at a frabricator's place shimmed up, ready to go getting paid to wait until the load is ready. Would love to pull that load.
It's funny because I was sitting in a truckstop and some guy was telling everyone that he pulls a 13 axle stretch.

    bigguns and johndeere4020 Thank this.
