I’m thinking maybe more than 1–2 inch strap going over the top

Not only that but them coils are sitting in a 3’ well. Not on a flatbed.

Those are probably the safest way to haul coils due to front restraint and lower center of gravity but not always practical. Those trailers only work for shotgun and for customers with overhead cranes. Some customers use forklifts to load/unload single coils. With proper securement and some driving sense, coils can safely be hauled on flatbeds.

Firstly, there is a anti friction mat in the well, this reduces the legal securement requirements to 60% .

    Forward is the 2 stakes.
    So that is covered.

Sideways you need 50% off the load.
If that is a 16 000lbs coil then 8 000 would need to be secured but we have the 60% anti friction mats which means 4 800 needs securing.
But the angle off the strap is less then 80° so the number becomes 4 800*0.9=5 333lbs.
A strap gets 5 000lbs max so short by 1 strap if the coil weighs 16 000lbs.

Now would i do it that way?
    No.
I would put at least 4 straps over it.
For the few minutes it takes............not worth not putting extra.

    bigguns Thanks this.

That coil is only 16k lbs? that changes things a bit.
Ours are usually 45k to 50k lbs.

    Big difference.

I'm guessing as to it's weight.
From the looks off it,a normal load with that size off coil, would be 3 off those.
A big coil would be higher then those stakes..

    bigguns Thanks this.

Those trailers are (un)loaded a lot by forklift.
Either they have a piece off railtrack or they use a foot wide braided steel strap with 2 big rings that slide over the forks off the forklift.
That is mostly at the docks.

    bigguns and kylefitzy Thank this.
