There is no regulation that dictates placement of straps or chains, I.e. spacing front to back, just the number required. At least for general securement.

I've been told by many people if hauling lumber out of NY to make sure there's 3 straps over the last bundle, regardless of length. Not sure how "they" could enforce it, but I prefer to be the guy that they do a quick glance and move on. Besides, I can't think of a time I didn't put 3 over the back stacked bundles of just about anything.

1 strap for each 10' or partial of 10' of load, and 1 additional for no bulk head, what's called a 'penalty strap'. That's not exactly how it's written in the green book, but it's my interpretation. I usually put two in the first 10', just to avoid unpleasantness from an ignoramus with a badge.

This discussion has been had here a few times already.

Depending on the length of the bundles, I always try to put 3 on anything that's bundled, with the middle pulling opposite of the other two.

How much further can these folks dumb this industry down? That fall protection isn't from the shipper, when he pulled the curtain back it was already set up. No way in hell I'd be rolling with that bs on my wagon.

I was at a steel plant in ohio and they attached a net to the entire side of my trailer on both sides. Wtf? Safety has definitely taken a totalitarian turn for the worse as of late.

Maybe that guy's normal customer requires it so he just keeps it up?

I used to load at an aluminum plant in WV that put up nets so that if you fell off the truck, you’d land in the nets covered in aluminum sharp chips. I guess that’s better then the ground.

I think we are all looking at this the wrong way. Maybe we should be thanking this driver for standing up for us. There is probably a shipper somewhere trying to figure out what truck drove away with their fancy fall protection system!

Guess he can only fall off the one side?
