Say you have 4 chains on a single suicide coil. You in a accident and 2 or 3 chains, or tie downs fail. Like in a rear end collision. That X chain will cause a coil to spin and rotate. Now instead of hitting the bulk head and rolling over cab and killing driver at worst. It's gonna turn and exit the trailer. Land in the roadway, on top of another car, person.

I've now learned something new, thus today is a success despite an untouched to do list.

Its against the dot regulations too, correct ? I mean even just thinking about it, a x chain on a suicide coil is not providing that much securement in terms of it actually touching the coil , just on the edges of the coil it self..but not coming fully across the coil like a horshoe chain (as i call it) would

I would never call you ignorant for not knowing if it's not in the scope of your job. I would call you ignorant for doing it and not knowing.

So what's the difference in force application when using x-chains on a shotgun coil?

Would you x chain a shotgun coil? When I chained mine I tried to keep them as close to the coil as possible. If I used 2 posts per chain like the other guy suggests the angle of the chain would be so far outside of the coil it wouldn’t provide much downward force.

That is a good question now that u asked it. I am not qualified to answer. only pulled less than 30 coils in my entire open deck career

For me, ignorance isn't a slur or sin, just a state of being. Willful ignorance however . . .

There are stupid questions. They tend to be the most important questions to ask.

The driver probably wasn’t supplied with J-plates. As we know, some companies won’t spend an extra dime on anything, when it comes to flatbeds.

    How are they pointless?

What doesn’t make sense in suicide securement is if a person chains straight through the eye, only half the chains are preventing movement forward. The other half are on the front half helping to roll the coil forward. Straight through the eye doesn’t prevent the coil from sliding sideways, either. In shotgun securement, chaining straight through pulls the coil to one side, helping the coil to work against the chains on the other side. There is only half the chains holding against the forces. Regardless of govt regs, am I wrong in my thinking?

In your above pics, you’re pulling the hog chain around four corners, with two of them at 90°. All those corners reduce chain tension. Also, should that coil move, that’s going to lose whatever tension it’s offering. Am I wrong?

I’ll take an ejecting coil over getting ran over by a coil, any day. Your argument here is weak.
