He was asking what y’all used to tie down a flatbed load in the before time. I think chains and cables were pretty much the standard. But you’re an old coot who was doing it back before the big war

$10 says he had a leaking wheel seal. Leaked oil all over the old shoes. They pulled it apart to replace the seal and shoes. Whoever put the hub back on didn't tighten or secure the spindle nut properly. So the whole hub/drum/duals came off as one piece. I bet the nut is still sitting inside the hub cover. Dude better get his money back from whoever did that job and find someplace else to go. Probably destroyed the bearings and spindle too.

He got crazy lucky that happened in the parking lot. That's easily 500+lbs of tire and metal. Would destroy anything it hit at 60mph.

I'd think it must have been wobbling like crazy for a bit though. As the nut backed off and the bearings got loose.

Looks like the hub ,wheels, tires and all came off. Somebody didn't get that big nut thingy on the end locked down.

Up until two years ago our entire fleet of trailers (300 ish) you couldn’t get a tire into a winch if you tried. The trailer set high enough and the suspension didn’t dump when the brakes were set, for the most part anyway.

fast forward to two years ago and we replaced almost our entire fleet of flatbed with aluminum Ritenour trailers. They sit lower and the suspension dumps when you set the brakes. The winches will get into the outside rear tires if you’re not carful with placement. We’ve replaced quite a few tires, even more have “the circle of shame” but are still legal.

    We
We had that happen once and got lucky the wheels didn’t come off. Had the inner wheel seal replaced, when the tech put every thing back together the hub caught the lip of the seal and didn’t seat all the way.

the damage was found after making a 2000 mile round trip with a 3 million dollar airplane wing. The banging in and out had broken the cast metal hub cap and slung the grease everywhere.

Seems that the cause was from a loose nut at the wheel.

Yep, I did that. Someone had to. It was just sitting there.
