In my first job they had us split loading asphalt shingles.

The first time I looked at one of those loads and having to drop it later just seemed completely wrong to this then-greenhorn.

I had big granite blocks on a 50 ton Talbert before. I recall one being in the neighborhood of 42 metric tons.

I got one hell of an overweight ticket with one of those.

I well I have a honest question I don't know. Is there a table or guide to estimate a rocks weight? I know you can weigh a load. But a guy rigging to lift would need a idea. Plus the non conforming size, type of rock and age of rock could change alot. I've lifted, swung, moved some big rocks. I probably way over rigged them. But I've never been told a way to calculate them.

Look up the density of the rock and then multiply by the volume.

This reminds me of a Schneider truck years ago, when the 151 4-lane was new, between Madison and Dubuque. One of the off ramps was a long, fairly steep uphill. I assume he stopped to water a tire, and did a poor job on a smooth clutch release. It looked like the kool-aid man came through the back doors! There were a couple rolls of paper close to the truck, one a truck length or two behind, and another one way the hell down the hill back towards the highway. He's lucky it rolled into the ditch and finally tipped over, because I hate to think what that would have done to a car or truck that didn't see it coming.

That I can understanding. But doesn't density change with age? I didn't have a smart phone either when I was doing that job like now. The miss shape of rock would be tough. I guess to calculate on the squared off dimensions for safety.

Density shouldn't change with age. Possibly could change due to how wet the rock is, but as you said, go with squared off dimensions and round up the density and you'd be fine.

How about one of these? These rocks have long thought to be from Wales, far enough at 180 miles
    Google Maps

But now thought to have come from the north of Scotland, no trailers, no tractors, no permits. Just hundreds of burly blokes with lots of trees for rolling logs and lots of rope. Over 500 miles of pushing and pulling.
