@truckdad , do remember a similar picture that hung in the northbound scale at Castaic? It was a pretty gruesome reminder of what can happen.

I saw one at Conejo of a 988 on the cab. The CHP had those at a lot of scales.

Generally the rack is not the failure point. The cross timbers/dunnage is the failure point.
Using 2 racks, they are generally placed so they are out towards the edges of the coil, leaving the center section relatively unsupported. With load, they generally can flex, bow or break, even with hardwood. In that area. Now you have a loose coil.

The old rule of thumb was 8000 lbs per rack. 48,000 coil would/should get 6 racks. Not sure if thats still in play or not. Just the way we did them 20+ years ago.

Nope, not discounting the straps, just trying to figure out the possible configurations, as skallagrime points out what their equip specs and such are, but the picture doesn't relay it as such, that easily...which is what I was getting at..and as skallagrime points out also, that cinch doesn't get counted, at least in the circles I ran, and the DOT description to qualify, it's more a stabilizing restraint than a hold down restraint. :)

Agreed. I just couldn't see from the picture what was what...and of course, the 5/16" would have had to factor a certain amount, and I couldn't say from the picture. :dontknow:

LOL, I believe you. Trying to get people to wrap their head around direct and indirect securement concepts is hard. I actually had to explain it to a cop in Queen, TX that had stopped me for a DOT Level 2. Wasn't in a hurry and he had complemented me on the number of restraints I'd had on the load. He was under the misunderstanding that your boss was, as well. Go figure. :)
Showed him the section in the Green book, he thanked me and I went on my way.
    Math can be hard. :)
