I'm still curious as to how road tax is paid - via registration? I suppose it depends on the state.

WI has an additional surcharge added to the annual registration that is supposed to help make it up. Never really thought about that before so I went and looked it up. Normal registration is $85/yr. Hybrids pay another $75 and full EVs pay an extra $175.

Didn't seem like much but after doing some math the state is actually getting a pretty good deal. 30.9 cents/gallon for our road tax. So that $175 surcharge would be about 567 gallons of road tax on a gasoline vehicle. Assume you replace that EV with a car that gets 30mpg and you would have to drive 17,000 miles a year to break even. Any less driving and the state is ahead money. I'd bet that a lot of EV owners live near or in the major cities so they probably don't do anywhere near that kind of mileage.

Totally off subject but I heard that WI will hassle you for having your flip axle down if you’re empty even if you’re under 53’ long. Any truth to that?

Never had a problem with it myself and nobody I know has ever had an issue. I don't go near WI scales unless I absolutely have to though. The mobile guys tend to only grab local trucks for random inspections.

That almost sounds like somebody was running their mouth during a stop so the trooper decided to get them for Overlength since he couldn't get anything else.

Yep, I don't wander far, it is my normal fuel stop, quit going to the kwik trip closer to my start point since they have become parking Nazis. Like Hasty better anyway, real food and pretty nice people also, and I don't have a note on my door after spending $300 in fuel and $30 on food that I am not in an approved parking spot.
