Very true, in 1974 I was driving a worn out White 9000 with a 250 Cummins and a 19 spd. With something White called velvet ride , kinda like Mack hump back. You could drive over a dime and tell if it was heads or tails. But I was grinning from ear to ear cause I didn't know any better. May have be a White 4000 now that I think about it, it's been a minute.

I love my CAT, (don’t particularly like the truck it’s in) and dad has a truck with an N14 in it, I wouldn’t turn my nose up at one of them. He also has a DD15, POS. He’s trying to sell that one. Supposedly the DD series is made by Mercedes? My brother has a Series 60, gets good mpg, but no powerhouse. 960k, it’s in the shop right now getting a total rebuild, and there isn’t a mechanic within 2 hours of here that will even change injectors on a Detroit. Had to run it up,to Michigan

I like my little series 60, I tell people it's the small block Chevy of the trucking industry. Not the first one to the top of the mountain, but it'll get you there.

The n14 was the last engine Cummins built that was worth a crap, the isx ruined there name, wouldn't touch a Cummins after that, but that's just me. I think it was ddec1 might have been 2 that was in the 95 that blew up on me, or lost a wrist pin which was common in the early series 60 after that if you can keep injectors in them they are pretty good motors. Still would take a 3406 or c15 over anything on the market.

I’m curious how an X-15 would hold up with a little… “work”, like a delete job and foremost, and swapping out the plungers in the fuel pump since that’s apparently the other fatal flaw they have.

I like mine also. I have had this one for 9 years and all 9 with a Pittsburgh Power Box which makes it a much more enjoyable motor to operate. 750,000 miles on this rebuild and she still pulls like a champ. It likes to breath and slober more than the modern motors but for a 1996 it is doing just fine. I wouldn’t trade even for a 2025 anything.

local shop mechanic I was speaking with last week told me to do just that if I would buy a Cummins. Been thinking about upgrading the old star car, just wondered his opinion on what’s a reasonable replacement

dd series are garbage. But the n14 is one of the best cummins ever made. I'd buy one in a heartbeat

Don't forget about the kta600. My favorite truck engine. Pittsburgh power turned one up to 800 hp and 2200 lb ft of torque. And that was just used for everyday hauling. Wicked power and reliability them things.
