The truth about electronic on board recorders or better known as (qualcomm/peoplenet) or eobc's electronic on board computers is that they are only used in companies that hire students or not too experienced drivers (less than 2-3 years) and companies that are too big to manage by their office staff. In other words it's a babysitter. The eobc or eobr will never be mandated by gvmt because the 3year 5year 10year vet drivers don't need em. Company owners will have to run logs ALL the time because the on board computer will be "down"(technical problems) all the time. The eobc is not really about safety but more an incriminating device for the driver in case of an accident/incident or anyone tries to sue uncle sam or the trucking co. Statistics show that eobc's are only used in about 10% of the trucking industry. THIS IS JUST MY OPINION AND NOT BASED ON ACTUAL PROOF.![]()

Well you know what they say about opinions.....have a link to this "statistic" you claim?
-
I hope the OP knows that EOBR's are great for proving your point..As in getting Detention Time Paid....Would a "Babysitter" do that much?
-
Most of the trucking industry (about 85%) are smaller fleet companies, they are just not noticeable. That was on the Lockridge report (xm radio)
.....I think the public should know about this and where they industry stands..
I mean i'm not posting this in a negative way here guys..i don't have any real proof either, just saying..

Wow... only companies the hire and train students? Only the big carriers? Sure news to me.
My carrier is on the smaller side.... roughly 300 trucks of which about 80 are company trucks. No students... you have to have 2 years verifiable for them to even talk to you.
Oh... and we are using the Qualcomm MCP200 with EOBR. I actually have taken a liking to it after having it in my truck for a year now. Saves me a lot of paperwork. No one is really watching the thing, unless something major happens that flags the safety dept. My travel agent still has to ask if I have the hours to pull something off. If the hours are such that a run can't be completed as planned, I let them know up front and they adjust the appt times. And I can run around with my truck all I want when not doing carrier related stuff. Just drive to my heart's content OFF DUTY. No questions asked. Hasn't bit into my revenue. My NET last year was just under $70K.
Is it good for everyone? Not hardly. Each situation is different. Should it be mandated? Hell NO! But it isn't that big bugaboo that everyone (mostly those that have no experience with them) thinks they are. I have no problem living in the present instead of the past. I have been at this game for 3 decades, and I have no problem using an EOBR. -
Good point, i also added- if a carrier is too big for the office to mng. Just my opinion

It's a proven fact that 85% of figures are made up.(including this one)
Don't have any proof, just saying, in my opinion.Kansas Thanks this. -
actually, its 96% (including this one)

I BEEN RUNNING WITH QUALCOMMS ALL MY TRUCKING CAREER AND NOT ANY ISSUES AT ALL,ACTUALLY I LIKE.

Electronic logs are the best thing to happen to trucking. It keeps the driver from being asked to take a load when they know he can't. Because all you have to do is say no look at my hours.
I have been driving for 17 years. I have worked for companies that used custom printed logbooks, loose leaf, Qualcomm and now PeopleNet. I will not work for a company that uses paper logs!
