This is going to be a longer post, so forgive me.
The info I will post let's say I heard it from a guy who knows a guy who...
Anyway... The good people at DOT know elogs have nothing to the with safety, actually their studies have shown that accidents involving trucks have not gone down since elogs came to be, actually they have gone up. So what's the reason they are pushing for elog? The reason is that the giant companies (Schneider, JB, Swift, Werner...) want to outsource your jobs to Mexico, and with elogs the giants are killing 2 birds with one stone. First they are killing off the competition, the independent O/Os as well as smaller companies, whose productivity goes down as much as 20% with elogs.Second, they are creating drivers shortage, with elogs drivers are not making as much money as before, and when new guys thinking about getting their CDL crunch the numbers and they see that being away on the road most of the time pays a little better that getting a 9-5 most will not get into the industry. And drivers shortage is what the giants want, they want it to get to the point where it affects the overall economy, and when that point is reached they will ask the Congress to give special visas to Mexican drivers to move to US, because driving trucks is "a job Americans don't want to do" (we've seen this before). Then the Congress will say No, but they will give permissions to Mexican trucks to drive all over the US and do interstate loads as well (they will be allowed to haul loads that move within US, currently only US truck are allowed that, even Canadian trucks can not haul those loads). And BINGO, that is EXACTLY what the big companies want, they don't want Mexican drivers moving to the US because then they will have to pay them somewhat decent wages, they want the permission to have Mexican trucks working within US. Then when the Congress grants them that permission the next step is them opening huge terminals just south of the border, moving 1000s of trucks to those new terminals and putting Mexican plates on them, and then hiring Mexican teams. By doing this they will be saving around $100.000 per truck per year! How? Well they will get a team for 5 cents a mile! Yes, 5 cents! Team makes 20.000 miles a month, 20.000x$0.05=$1.000, $500 per driver, and a Mexican driver will be happy to live in the truck for a month to take home $500. Why do you think those giant companies not only NOT oppose elogs but actually advocate for them? Safety is just the P.R. card they are playing, elogs have nothing to do with safety and anyone who goes over the numbers sees it within a minute. So all you drivers who are now supporting elogs and saying "no big deal" are being blind, because when you get a message on that same elog telling you the terminal is moving to Nuevo Laredo... tough luck!

I do not care anymore frankly where the trucks come from as long the goods, fuel and food maintain delivery schedules.

NAFTA took a step towards Canadian and Mexican trucks to run inside these united states back in 1994. And they are working on updating NAFTA again.

Having ternimals in Laredo makes no sense. The freight for example Meats alone is in a triangle of these United States bounded by Fort Collins CO, Plainview Texas, Dumas Tx, Garden City Texas, Omaha NE and certain other meat plants in that general area. These plants kill thousands of livestock per day and employ many hundreds if not thousands of migrant workers to chop and load the meats into the trailers which go to all three coasts asap. There are certain other spots around the USA that are hold outs for other kinds of meats such as Pork Products in VA down to the Carolinas for example. I believe the Chinese bought many of these larger facilities to secure the food supply for China to export to their homeland from our Nation. Global trade at it's best. We bring in Aussie Beef, South AMerican beef and other meats as well. Whatever the prices will support. It will be moved to and from the United States when and where it profits the most the people and companies with the power to do it.

Retail is dying. Amazon Rules. The growing power of Amazon is incredible. One of my relatives published a book a couple of weeks ago. A few thousand first run copies plus electronic copies etc is published and shipped via Amazon. Other nations are already using thier exchange rates to charge a little more than the basic price we charge for a copy and drop ship via Amazon to buyers in their country with little to no effort whatsover. Ebay and Amazon get their cut of the fees, the resellers get a few dollars, author gets the price she is asking for. etc. But the books will move. It does not matter if it's 1 copy or 5000 coplies, Amazon makes it happen. We just sit back and do nothing now that it's published. The cost? 3000 dollars. It will take a certain amount of sales to recoup the three thousand dollar expense in publishing a book. It's not much of a book but it's her book and she is now beginning to understand that she IS a generator of work in our Globalized economy when someone clicks buy for a copy of that book online.

If the internet went away and we had to sell the book the hard way, it's going to start at the libraries and we would have had to personally pack and ship the books from the house. It will be nuts with that phone rining off the hook. Maybe china will order 10,000 copies and reprint it to Chinese from english. They will make a bunch of money. So would the relative. (Minus royalites etc.)

I use the book publishing as a example of producing something and selling it on the American and Global Market to anyone with the money and buy now address. Amazon is so big they inhaled the entire book run and they will ship and have.

I think Amazon has gotten big enough now to start considering purchasing of say JB hunt. And other large companies to secure their supply resources and equiptment to make sure they have trucks and drivers to run the freight.

They will do nothing but Teams. SIngles will not have a trucking job anymore. HOS will make sure of that in Elogs. If you do not have a teamate now and into the future until Robotic tractor trailers take over you are facing a situation where you, the solo long haul trucker will essentially be stuck on the porch. If you are not doing LTL or regional bouncing around from Amazon warehouse to FED EX shipping and back again. They will be please to load a team with 48,000 pounds of stuff prepacked into airfreight contianers to stuff into cargo 747's in Memphis and outta here for all sorts of places by morning.

Long haul trucking would be just too slow eventually. Not until dedicated closed highways are built and protected with a tower FAA style at every exit and closed to ALL NON trucking vehicles and cars and so on. The result would be a carefully organized 200 mph platooned 18 wheelers running coast to coast in a day and night and back again the next day and night. Potentially daily round trip services LA to NY. Just need to increase the speeds 3 to 5 times what they are today and weed out anyone with any kind of violation anywhere in life. If you had a ticket for 15 over you would not be hired period in this brave new future of trucking.

At the same time railroads will have to increase to 150 mph instead of the standard FRA track speed of 79 for freight today that passes for mainline travel in the USA for freight. If they are content with 10 day service coast to coast as currently happens (While #####ing and firing drivers 15 minutes late on a three day team run to Boston...)

That is what gets me. Stuff 15000 containers on a Panamax ship in China. Take 2 months to cross the wide Pacific and all of a sudden American customers cry and scream that they want the Mr Coffee container load yesterday.

It's not that important to the Country. WHen will everyone understand this? I don't know, you ask me.

They can drive throughout US but can only haul loads that originate in Mexico, and when they pick up a load in the US the load must go to Mexico, they can not for example pick up a load in Missouri and take it to Texas. It is the same deal Canadian drivers have.

What is the difference if you send the exact same message to somebody via text, email, postal mail or carrier pigeon?

The only difference is the delivery method.

The same can be said of elogs or paper logs. THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE! They are just different ways to record HOS. Given that, it clearly indicates elogs is not the problem, HOS is the problem.

Why pay drivers? Just get self driving trucks.
