Good man. Actually went and read it.
Yep-and page 5 says not to do it if you float. As I said this thread opens up all sorts of questions. Catch 22. Common courtesy is probably the best answer. Turn them off in places you don't need them to save us all a lot more Gov BS. And waking other drivers up in stop is not at all cool. Common sense. If you are driving a truck w/stock mufflers most new ones don't bother anyone. Especially on low. If you got 8" straights and run through small town at night or during their church services you are just making trouble for others. Someone mentioned CO. Lots of their towns do have signs saying engine brake mufflers required. I 've also noticed some of the more farm based ones at the bottom of long grades that don't. Probably used to farmers having their goods brought in during harvest and think nothing of it. I think most drivers can figure out what's best for them and the conditions. Sure makes for a good argument though.

I guess they mean not to use it in between shifts. I leave it on while floating the gears but I never quite take my foot off the throttle so it never engages unless I want it to.

This is very easy, the laws in most ignorant places says use of engine brakes prohibited, just like that, some ignorant proposed and a bunch idiots said great lets do it. it should said modified mufflers equal ticket. My ISX cumins 460 hp does not make any engine brake noise at all. Is so easy to enforce noise pollution laws. We have 1 or 2 dot inspection a year and a few random level 3 why they don't crack down on it?

If you want to get technical about it, from the turbo out you can run straight pipe and be legal. Turbo acts as a muffler, (which is not modified), so you would half to get into how many decibles (or what ever they call them) that a truck could make as opposed to saying it has to have a muffler. This is why they go after the jake brakes, and not so much the mufflers.

Not really. Thus signs like "Engine brake mufflers required" in CO.

My favorite is "Excessive engine brake noise prohibited"...forgot what state/province uses those. However, it'll eventually be struck down as unconstitutional, because what IS excessive? When I see that sign I use my jakes but I dont redline it with the jakes...on a totally stock freightliner company truck. not excessive in my opinion...

I say unconstitutional because thats what happened to all the "Speed limit: Safe and prudent speed" signs. They were deemed unconstitutional because they were so vague. In dry weather, perfect visibility, not in the right lane, its safe to do around 120 on most interstates, to be honest (IN A CAR DUH). They were built that way so we can haul ### in the event of a nuclear attack. And if you notice, every curve and ramp is built so it can safely be used BACKWARDS at high speeds. It's the idea behind the contraflow setups in the hurricane prone areas, however, the real intention was nuclear attack...

To bad they designed all newer vehicles with electronics that would be fried by the EMP so nobody could get away.

Pretty sure it fries the electronic distributor too. Possibly the electric fuel pump. Anything with a circuit in it will melt.
