If you're doing 65 MPH in California, you're speeding. :yes2557:

I haven't been to california in 2 years, but when I did go there, my speed depended on the area i was in. I remember one time I had to drive all the way across LA in rush hour traffic averaging 5 mph....

    Usually i did about 60...

I'm a driver myself and have been for 24 yrs and i use my jake braks all the time but only when it's needed to thus to save my brakes and keep them as cool as possible i live next to a logging road and these guys run their straight pipes and jakes all the time and i'm not even on a hill there is no valid reason for them to use them now it has stopped cause i complained to the few companies that run trucks through here although i chose to live here there are abusive drivers and always will be these jakes are a safety tool and not all drivers use them for that therefore giving other drivers and jakes a bad name for when they are really needed some drivers power trip cause of the big sound it makes their truck have an i wont ##### at any citizen but sometimes we just have to deal with these things

I must not have been a real truckerer driverer, since I only used my jakes on the bigger downgrades, and used throttle control and following distance to save my brakes on other situations.:biggrin_25512:

I drive an old Oshkosh without a Jake Brake, but I really like Jakes
and the sound they make, especially in areas that echo.
    That is sooo cool.

For years I wished for a Jake Brake, ..... I even asked Sandy Claws to
stuff my stocking with a new Jake, --- but never received one.
    I know, bummers, huh?

Well, one Christmas Sandy Claws brought me one of those high-power
auto sound systems with 6 powerful amplifiers and 4, 15 inch bass speakers,
    10 mid-range speakers and 15 horn tweeters.
Only problem is, I don't own a car to put it in.
    Double bummers.

Then, a light bulb lit up over my head, ......:smt115....... after I flipped a switch
down in the basement. That gave me one of my ideas.
I had that sound system installed in the Oshkosh and acquired some
professionally recorded realistic sound tracts, like train horns and aircraft
taking off. One tract is of a Jake Brake at high RPM exhausting
    through straight stacks.

Wellllll, let me tell y'all, ........ when I pop that tape in the player, roll
down the driver's side window, ('cause the passenger's side window
is stuck closed), and crank that bad-boy up to maximum volume, I
rattle windows for miles around and little ol' ladies faint.
I can easily wake up the dead pretty much ANY time I want to, ......
which is mostly all the time.

It doesn't make my shifts quicker, or save my brakes. But I figure
who cares about the brakes? I bought this Oshkosh to GO, ....
not to stop. If the wheels ain't turnin', I ain't gettin' no attention
with a real Jake Brake. But with the recorded sound, I can make
Jake sounds while standing still. Now I get noticed and NObody
    can ignore me.

Just thought I'd pass that info on for those of you who are like me
and crave attention, ANY attention we can get.

    OH!
    And here's the kicker, ------
Wanna make Billy Bigrigger do a double take?
Get a run at an uphill mountain grade, --- enough to pass Billy and
his Bigrig. Then, while passin' Billy goin' UP hill, hit "play" on the sound
system with the volume cranked waayyy up.
I bet the next day ol' Billy trades his Bigrig in on a faster Big truck
thinkin' he got passed goin' up hill by an ol' '52 Oshkosh driven
by a bearded, self-centered, attention hungry maniac.

I get attention in Big truck truck stops late at night when nobody is
talkin' on the CB, too. And if the recording of the Jake Brake don't
get no response, the realistic sound tract of battle sounds sure does,
especially the low flying aircraft on a strafing and bombing run.
It cracks me up to see Big truck truck drivers divin' outta their
Big truck bunks and hittin' the ground, duckin' for cover on the
    asphalt, yellin' INCOMING!
Makes my day --- even at night.

    .

    .

    .

Can I get a thank yew?

    You're welcome.
    :laughing-guffaw:

that is true. they are just being ######## and need a lesson in common sense and common decency. when i was driivng i used my jakes when i needed to. other than that i was respectful of driver's sleeping. now i was in virginia one night on highway 50 i think it is running from danville to I-95 and there is a hill there that is a 10% downgrade and is curvy the entire way down. i was hauling 45,000 lbs of glass on a spread axle flatbed. i had my jakes on the whole way down and never left 3rd gear. yall might think i am stupid and a newbiebut i have been around trucking all my life and my dad taught me alot of what i know today and he also taught me what common courtesy and common sense is but my brakes never burnt up and i made it safely down that mountain. it is the inconsiderate $%$&##! that give the professional and safe drivers a bad name.

Common sense there Redneck. You'll live longer than those without it.

I always have what we call our exhaust brake / engine retarder set to on and coupled with a cruise control travelling during the night on our motorways i very rarely have anything to do except keep her straight as she speeds up and slows according to how I set her up.

We dont have your mountains to contend with but we have companies who set the limits and issue driver warnings for going too fast.
