    If your motor is using fuel during jake usage you need to take it to the shop and have it worked on. Jakes only work when you have your foot off the go pedal. When your foot is off the go pedal the injectors are off. There is no way for fuel to be pulled into the motor. It doesn't work like a gas engine with a carburetor where it will still draw in fuel. Same with a gas burner with fuel injection. No fuel can be drawn in. If your gonna drive it learn the basics about how it works.

    Only if you're driving like an idiot. If you accelerated to highway speed and stayed there for 200 miles before letting off to slow down for a town, that's not wasting fuel.

    Yeah, they also have weird ideas like double clutching between every gear always and lugging the engine down to 900rpm before shifting.

    When operating and operated properly, yes that's right.
    Not exactly.
    The speeds achieved prior to applying a Jake could have been provided by gravity.
    But if we're going to include fuel burned getting up to speed, only to be slowing down soon after, I think that depends on the reason for the reduction in speed.
    If,
    A. A driver who is aware of a situation that exists which will require that he slow down within a couple of miles after reaching speed, and in spite of that awareness, still gouged on it hard to run-'er-up quick.
    Or,
    B. A driver who is a known fuel-squeezer and checked current road conditions as part of a pre-trip-trip plan --- already aware of the construction zone brake-check, and drives accordingly, slow-n-EZ, think .......................

    C. A driver just passin' through who got up to speed six hours ago and been runnin' at 70 mph most of the way, who isn't aware of the necessity to back-'er down, ergo next to impossible to predict and plan ahead for.

    Did all of the examples "waste" fuel gettin' up to speed?
    If so, for the driver with a 6-hour run, the fuel amount that might be considered wasted would be a very - very small percentage of the total amount burned.

    But regardless of the method used to attain speed, all of the examples above had to slow down. I'm thinkin' the amount of fuel consumed is a given, and would have to be factored in somewhere in the equation. Maybe average the total amount of fuel consumed and determine which of the examples consumed more and how much more. Pretty small amount, I'm thinkin'. Is there a formula for factoring that information?
    And the word "waste" needs to be more clearly defined.
    Gettin' up to speed is part of the job.
    Is that considered wasting fuel?

    For the sake of conversation, let's assume that Desperado is being serious, --- but not implying that's the case.

    With that situation --- wheel rotation supplying the energy could be a return of investment to the engine for gettin' the Big truck up to speed in the first place.
    Man-0-Man, another equation to factor into the fuel wasted to reach speed formula.

    That's what I'm told when I get arrested.
    But I don't call Cat or Cummins.
    Or Jake either.
    Usually it's Bailey Bonds.

    My favorite --- keep your eyes on the tach to know when to shift.

    Who/What's watchin' the road ahead while a driver is watchin' the tach for information they already know if they drive by ear & feel?
    A tach is a reference gauge, when needed, ...... but not necessarily depended on. Can a Big truck be safely operated without benefit of a tach?

    I think the Jake Brake is simply a release valve on all that hot air built up in the cab from the driver runnin his mouth...... Just a thought

    Mine apparently can since the tach has been covered by a gps unit for nearly a year. Speaking of possibly dangerous reference devices.

    Everyone is a genius!

    But here are some questions:

    1). What proof is available that measures the quantity of wasted fuel by applying the jake brake?
    2). How much fuel is being wasted by applying the jake brake?
    3). By using the jake brake if fuel IS wasted, then how will this affect fuel costs, fuel taxes, and the effects on the environment?

    Yeah, a moot arguement. Pretty pointless.
