I've found it to be very difficult to shift either way with the jakes on. Something about the way the ECM is programmed on Cascadia makes it nearly impossible to get the rpm right with the fuel pedal while the jake is on. So, if I'm downshifting for a stop sign or light or whatever, I have to shut the jake off. And upshifting is an even bigger pain in the rear for those times I forget to push the little button to shut it off. It's a good thing they moved that switch to the steering wheel...keeps my hands there when I have to reach for that button. :)

    Baack Thanks this.

For a harsh term you "cant drive" once you attain proficiency with the wiggle stick the engine brake doesn't matter.
Please take no offense, experience only comes with time.:biggrin_25525:

It still wastes fuel the way most people use it. Your brakes waste fuel too. Lets see.

If you're doing 25 in a truckstop and slam the jakes on. What the hell were you doing 25 in a truckstop for? I see this all the time.

Fuel all the way til your right on a stop sign, BRRRRRRRRRRR the jakes.

Just like if you just used your brake. It wastes fuel that was used to attain the wasted energy.... dur.

Put the jakes on LOW, it will allow faster shifts. It's also annoying, but not so much on a cascadia.

Sometimes if im starting on a hill i put the jake on low to shift faster. It makes a difference on a hill. However, pulling off the fuel island and banging 6 gears just to stop at the stop line? No, it doesnt make a difference there.

For the most part it's not your truck so you don't have to worry about all the stress on the transmission gears when you mis a shift because the jake caused it to pop out.

It part of how we tell the cubs, is trying to shift with the jake on. My engine brake is kept turned off, except for running off the grades. I've nothing to prove and a truck is not made for speed shifting.

When the whole industry has gone to automatics, and except for real O/O it will, you can thank the Hot Rods running around with there jakes on trying to impress the rest with there speed shifting in the Wal-Mart parking lot.

When's the last time you drove a Cascadia??? The fuel pedal DOES NOT WORK while the switch to the jake is on. Just for grins, I tried it again. Trying to downshift with the jake switched on. Pedal to the floor....nothing. It's the way the ECM is programmed. And don't tell me I don't know how to drive!

BTW: There's nothing wrong with my motor either. THE ECM IS PROGRAMMED THAT WAY.

You can call Freightliner and ask them.

Never had a problem with it in any other model truck, but every Cascadia I've been in is like this.
