i have a hard time right now, taking care of my mother whom has medical problems and my sister bailing out on me to date her boyfriend not helping take care of my mohter. i want to become a OTR but with all the crud coming around the corners... it's hard not to feel guilty leaving her alone. she does drive me insane with repetive material about family and her mother "family personal matters" and i want to get out of the house and get on with my life. i have always been a huge fan of big rigs, yet my family is so up their own streets that they don't even recognize what i even like anymore. so here is my problem, haven't had a job in a while, still trying to find a good school that i can go to that is accredited, have very little money to spend, and will need to get a loan to pay for housing and food while being trained.

anyone else have this type of problem before and give out some pointers in the right direction?

DO NOT assume trucking will be your saving grace, as many people seem to think. Luck to ya'.

I would personally advise you to wait on the trucking idea until things with your mom are better. You are going to be spending long periods of time away from home and if something were to happen it would be very tough for you to get back in a reasonable amount of time.

My dad passed away while I was over the road and we were actually waiting on our truck that was in the shop. Took us 3 days to get back to Florida to take care of things with the family. I have had this happen 4 times while out on the road with different relatives and it really sucks.

Other than your situation with your mom trucking sounds like it would be something good for you. Just make sure that it is the right time to take the leap.

    Good luck.....

well i've been intrested in trucking since i graduated high school and looked into it. i have no real life friends because my family kept on moving, from the divorce, i like to be alone and driving... so that is a plus, i've always admired big rigs since i was in middle school, my mother... well lets just say she's satans best friend on a good day, and that i am extremely un appreciated. i have a neighbor that works for ~area trucking~ he's old but i can never be able to catch him to talk to him about his experiences trucking. i've been researching trucking for about 5 years now... i like to be very thurough when i do go to a school and get schooled. i don't want to be in a school that turns out drivers like they were air to breathe but a school that will at least pay attention to the student.

i cannot find a forum about ~surburban trucking school~ here in michigan and that is the school that sent me a brochure. they want to talk but i keep on telling them that i don't have a phone line but a cell phone with limited minutes. that is why i asked them to send me a letter back, suppose that was too much for them to complete on their own. i havent worked a good year since michigan IS the biggest pit to find a job... even at a burger joint. i just lost my car as it broke down and it sucks. so anyone who can help me will be greatly appreciated in ways that others take for granted.

Most schools out there are pretty comparable. With that being said they are there to just get you your license and will prepare you and train you enough to go with a trainer of your chosen company. You are not a professional driver once you graduate! You will most likely learn more on day one with your trainer than the entire three weeks of schooling! If you are interested in a particular company just make sure they are hiring drivers from your selected school. There are a lot of "backyard" schools out there that companies will not recognize as accredited.

There is also the company schooling route in which you can opt for that you can do with no money upfront. Yes you will have to sign a contract with the company but personally I would rather be on the hook with them than a bank or financial institution. The companies will usually pay for your school, lodging, transportation and even meals while you are in school and training. Another big plus is that you are guaranteed a job provided you pass their school!

    Good luck...
