I was reading another thread that was kind of similar to the one that I am typing. In school, you learn about everything you need to do on the pre-trip, and all the laws you "have" to follow. It didn't bother me to check just the lights on a pre-trip. It didn't bother me to drive while eating. It didn't bother me when he was on the phone talking (even though according to company policy you can't even talk on the phone with a bluetooth). It didn't even bother me while my trainer fell asleep for hours while I was driving. What did bother me is when I had to rewrite my logs every day. Not that I did anything wrong, but because my trainer told me to lie on them. The first night we left from Sabetha, KS to St. Louis. We left Sabetha at 6:30 PM, and we got to St. Louis at 3:30 AM. Okay fine, but when we got there I was told to rip up my log saying that we left Sabetha at 10 AM. Okay.... Then at 7:30 AM we were unloading. I was thinking "okay I can do this for a day". Then when we stopped the next day it was the same thing. This time I got a six hour break. So 4 and 6 for two days isn't legit for ONE day, let alone two. Hell the way it was split up, it wouldn't have even counted for one day of rest! By the third day I was so overtired that I was unable to sleep. I stopped in a truck stop to get something to eat, and use the bathroom. I when I saw my face in the mirror, I looked like a ghost. My eyes were bloodshot, and my face was white. Comeon guys/girls is it really this hard to make money in this industry? If any of you say "yes" then how do companies like Werner make any money with electronic logs? The company is deficient in CSA 2010 scores as is. That and I make $420/week on trainee's pay. If I got one ticket, there goes two weeks of pay... Sorry but working 14 hours in one day is far more than enough.
We got to BF, KS which was an hour from my car. We were at this guys house, he wanted to go to some firefigher's meeting so I had about 4 hours off duty. I was going to sleep, and then leave for Denver. I laid down for a bit, but I couldn't sleep. At this point I couldn't get caught up on sleep. I tried calling the safety director at work. I left a message. I tried to lay down for a while and thought about the situation. I then made another call and arranged to get a ride. I knocked on Jason's door (my former trainer), and asked if there was a restaurant in the town. There was, but it was closed for remodeling. I then asked if there was a bar, and luckily three was one. I was like the keys are in the truck. "What are you going downtown". I was like "no, I'm leaving". At this point I made him look through the truck, and verify that I didn't take anything. I was walking down the street, and he was following me asking if it was something that he did. I don't care if he can go on 3-4 hours of sleep every night. I can't. I don't care if he fibs on logs, but don't make me do it. I don't have a problem with "oh if that accident wasn't there we would have made it there 15 minutes earlier". But lying about a half a day, every day, is just BS.
In another thread some people were saying "don't be a snitch" and "if everyone followed the rules we wouldn't make any money". Horse hockey. It was getting to the point where I felt unsafe driving. I looked up how much a 2011 Kenworth T660 was. I could have totaled a $140,000 tractor. A rep for Werner told me that their trainers make between 65-100K a year. Don't tell me that this guy could have slowed the #### down a little bit and did things right. I don't know how he could work the hours that he did, but I did notice that his right arm would twitch all the time and he could never keep his legs calm. Unfortunately, I have several friends that got into coke and meth... I never said anything to the safety director about this because I don't have any proof that he was on something, but I just didn't feel safe around him. I would try and catch up on sleep in the passenger seat, and seeing things like this out of the corner of my eye made me nervous.
So, once again; it is really this hard to make any money in this field??? I stopped by the school to see what they had to say, and they told me to talk with the safety director, and tell her exactly what was going on. I explained everything to her, and I'm supposed to let her know if I want another trainer. I had such a bad experience, that I don't really want to go back, but I don't need anything on my DAC report, either.

this from you, posted on Oct 29th, 2010
this is why it befuddles me when people say things like,
"i like to drive"
"i always wanted to drive"
"i like being away from home"
"it's in my blood" (how can it be, when one hasn't even driven yet..??)
well what can anyone say, that "driving a big rig as a student is going to be a bed of roses"..
do you think that some of us had it easy when we first started out...??
do you think we were well rested..??
do you think we had enough to eat, or shower when needed..??
this is why i will say, "just because you like something", is no reason to expect it's all that it's cracked up to be"....
can one make money in THIS BUSINESS....sure, but you gotta pay your dues...falsify a logbook, no......but you have to do what you have to do, just to get by and get out on your own.
do not expect your next job to be any easier, in fact, if you quit, expect no job offers at all..
typical newbie crybaby BS......
good luckold-school, BNR32, Points South and 3 others Thank this. -
OK, from what I see in your post giddyup, you are still employed by Werner and have the chance to get another trainer. I think under the circumstances, you should "go for it."
I am not at all convinced that what you did was the right thing to do, however, neither am I convinced that it was not. You were there, and I wasn't.
The only thing I have to say about it, is that if you did NOT do so, you should have talked with your trainer and told him of your concerns. But perhaps you did, and got nowhere with him.
Anyway, you probably will have to put up with SOMETHING you don't like, anytime you are teaming, and that of course includes training. No two people are going to feel the same way about everything.
But the training will be over, soon. Then you can do it your way.
I do agree that you should not have let him jeopardize your career, hell, even your life, by continuing with what was going on. But maybe he was testing, to see how far he could push you. You won't ever know now, if you did not try to talk to him about it.
Whatever he was thinking, I don't agree with what he was doing, if he was doing as you stated.
But you really do need to work on communicating with your next trainer. Good luck.Giggles the Original, Wargames, giddyup306 and 1 other person Thank this. -
