recently,I had a load of mulch from florida to virginia to a home depot
nothing on the rate confirmation said i had to unload or assist....I got the bol and it said 'driver assist, tailgateing"
I said bull ####,not at this price....I went to the home depot in virginia and asked where they wanted me,they said we are going to unload it in the parking lot...fine i said,so Ipulled over to where they wanted me to park and jumped in my sleeper...soon a knock on my door, are you about ready?asked the guy?
ready for what i asked,he said ,if you haven`t noticed, the bol says you assist by getting in the trailer and using this pallet jack to pull the pallet back and we`ll unload them with this forklift..
I said bull ####,i ain`t unloading anything unless i get paid for it.it isn`t my contract, the rate con is as far as i am concerned..I called the broker and told him and he said I`ll get back to you...I see the home depot guy in the mirrors on the phone...15 minutes later he came up and asked if i could back into the dock in the rear of the store....a change of plans..sure i said....they had me unloaded in 15 minutes..and i did not have to struggle with 2000 -3000 lbs pallets of cypress mulch for free

I have one that happened back when i was working for CONWAY out of Jessup,md. If any driver here ever been to a CNS warehouse you already know what's about to happen. ONe day during the summer it was about 85 degrees outside i want to CNS wholesalers warehouse down Upper marlboro,md. Now i had a load of dry goods but they sent me to the freezer to unload it, mind you it's 85 degrees outsige so i have on shorts and a Tshirt. When i went inside the building of course they're the lumpers asking about my load i told them that i don't think my company pays for lumpers...... Now at this time the lumper took my bills and said One hundred dollars for 8 skids that did not needed to be broken down. I told him my company doesnt pay for lumpers and i called my dispatch and told him that i needed a coat if they wanted this load to come off. But i'm about 40 minutes from my terminal. As i waited for my supervisor to bring me a coat i felt my truck moving . Needless to say the lumpers started unloading my truck and when they finished the lumper in charge who i told that my company doesn't pay for lumper service parked his car in front of my tractor and asked me for the money! I told him that i told you that my co doesn't pay for lumpers . He told me that i wasn't going any where and proceeded to try to take the key out of my tractor. But anybody who worked for conway know that the keys in the trucks can't be taken out. I laughed when i seen him try that technique . Of course he was heated and left anfd got the supervisor for CNS. By that time my supervisor showed up and we walked to the guys office where we just started going at it. My supervisor DON F told him you can either load my trailer back up and we would leave with the freight. The guy said it was already put up. SOOOOOOO we left and i was never sent to that CNS AGAIN! BUTTHATS JUST ONE STORY I HAVE MORE.

My worst load was from JBS Swift Premium in Marshalltown, IA. The place has an independant trailer wash out next door that is mandatory. The place is responsible for inspecting inbound trailers for damage also and it is documented on a form.
Anyways, I go in for a simple drop/hook. The place is a mudhole with potholes a four wheeler can get lost in. I 4wd into my trailer and hook and start my pre trip. I look under the trailer and two crossmembers on the frame are busted and hanging down. There is a one foot by six inch hole in the bottom of the trailer and I can see the product.
For those who never hauled meat, the trailer must be totally enclosed and sealed to maintain integrity and not have product contamination. A USDA inspector will reject a load if not.
This trailer should of never been loaded and I told JBS that and I'm responsible for the load when I sign the bills. I made them reload the trailer on another one of our trailers.
With an attitude from hell, they got mad at me and to teach me a lesson made me sit in their parking lot over the weekend for 30 hours while they cross docked. I patiently waited them out as my fridge was stocked, I had plenty of cigarettes and some new DVD's
The load had 3 drops in NC/SC and the appts had to be reset. I run hard to the first drop as I was behind from the get go. My appt was at 1100 and posted as such on my Peoplenet. I get there exhausted at 1000 and the customer said I was suppose to be there at 0600 and had to reschedule. WHAT? I nicely pleaded with him to help me out as they were not busy. Nope, reschedule for the next day. I'm starting to boil but maintain my cool. Now with the 1st drop rescheduled, the next two have to be rescheduled again.
I get to the second drop the day after the 1st drop is complete. Guess what? Stop 3 is in front of stop 2. They charge me an extra $140 to pull the freight off and $50 for using their dock space. By this time my brain is numbI'm a company driver so I just order a comcheck. The last drop was glad to see me.
All said and done, I got $300 extra for sitting at JBS and $100 for the 1st drop layover.
The next time I went to JBS, the parking lot was nicely graded and expanded and I received first class service. I'm sure someone got in alot of trouble over that load. -
Coca-Cola in Elmsford, NY. 14 hours to get loaded. I spent about 7 hours in the sleeper, watched a 2 hour movie and even made and ate dinner - and these guys weren't even finished! I think these union guys work for 15 minutes and take 45 minute breaks.
On the bright side, I'd run out of hours the second I bumped the dock there. The 14 hour wait allowed me to reset the clock and run some more. -

Ralphs DC in compton,ca is the worst Ive been to. Very tight getting in the docks, lumpers, 5 hours to unload me,
the dunnage back in your trailer, if out of hours must still leave the property. Rude people. Im going out of my way to not shop at ralphs supermarkets.

Forget getting into the docks at Ralphs, just getting into the guardshack off the street is a pain in the rear at 7AM.
