I know exactly what the cost of freedom is. My family has been paying that cost since we kicked the king out. If you read my post you would have seen i strongly support benefits for injuries sustained. My problem is with the ones that expect to be treated for every sniffle they get 20 years after serving.
And let's not pretend that every soldier is some war hero, the vast majority never see a dangerous environment. Spending 4 years at ft stewart is not the same as spending 4 years in vietnam, or rushing the beach in Normandy. For many the cost they pay is working a warehouse in panama city Florida.

that's part of the deal when you sign up the pay is not that good to be honest with you there is very few vets that go there most are eligible for Medicare anyways
7seriestv, Dave_in_AZ and Jarhed1964 Thank this. -
VA coverage for veterans is part of the agreement when taking the oath to serve. Without it, they would have a lot harder time filling uniforms. If you don't like the "deal", then petition Congress to change it. Until then.....it's part of the deal. I don't use it cause I hate the VA, but my dad is all over it (RVN vet, retired officer with pay, effects of agent orange).
Bean Jr. and Dave_in_AZ Thank this. -
and spending 4 yrs at ft. Stewart is not the same as 4 yrs in the private world
7seriestv and Jarhed1964 Thank this. -
VA is desperation mode. I never went that route with Dad. Medicare paid almost all his bills, and he was costing $1.2 million a year.
Did it actually cost that much? I'd think not, maybe 20 or 30 percent of that, but that's what medicare was billed.
One of my best friends is a retired SCPO, had a heart valve go bad, man they strung him along forever. I thought he was gonna die. I mean he looked like hell. Finally did the operation, he was a new man.
Gooberment doesn't want people living when they are aged, especially retired vets, it costs too much.Jarhed1964 Thanks this. -
I know it is a little scary sometimes trusting the government with your health care ... I go to the va in Cleveland and I guess it is one of the better ones and I never had any problems in fact I prefer it to most hospitals I live 58 miles away so I guess I an eligible for that go where you want thing and I still go to va ... they have a clinic about 25 miles away where my dr is .... there's some issues with the va but it works for me but I think I am open to getting a second opinion on some things lol. I never went till I was 55 had enough of the government Dr's to last me 30 yrs lol ... and most everyone there is older than me and I bet 85% of the people up there are old enough for Medicare so it probably saves the government money in the long run

I'm far from anything close to recruiter verbiage. I'm talking from experience, the very first truck I OWNED (payed off title in hand) was from the most hated mega carrier in the industry, swift. I pay it off in 18 months, was it easy? No but I know plenty drivers out here at more reputable company for years who still can't own a truck. I personally know one driver that run team with his wife, has no kids and struggling for the last 6 years trying to own a truck. Right now if I was in the position where I'm leasing a truck and have 3 to 6 months to complete the lease and the carrier decide not to give me any loads I could sit at home and still pay off the truck, because over the few years I learn to reduce my living expenses and stop buy garbage that will just sit around and collect dust because I'm a truck driver and not home to use it.Jarhed1964 Thanks this.

The military should be providing a whole lot more than just healthcare for anyone who serve. I have the benefits I have never used it but I'm not against anyone who does, for a person to voluntarily put his/her life on the line they deserve more than just healthcare. The government lied to us about war on terrorism over a war they create to for their own financial gain and Halliburton is the head of it allJarhed1964 and DSK333 Thank this.

If you aren't the kind of person who is good at saving money just stay a company driver. Being an independent of any sort means being the kind of person who tends to save at least part of the profit they generate for a rainy day. Until you do some work on yourself and your ability to retain cash it's best to stay an employee with a steadyish check.
Save 75k. Then you'll be ready to think about being your own boss. If you can't muster the self discipline to save 75k over the next few years (during which you should be getting regular raises, good health insurance, and everything else that comes with being a company driver at a good company) you won't be able to do this right, and your chances of failure will absolutely sky rocket.Jarhed1964 Thanks this. -
I would wager 85% of owner operators do not have 75,000 in cash on hand ... that's just silly .. the more cash the better and you can't have too much but don't be scared of failure if you are scared of failure you will probably fail .. if you are living pay check to pay check as a matter of way of life you will fail .. you just have to but your business first until you get established. ... I don't recommend trying your own authority right of the bat for sure and I strongly recommend you get a truck on your own outside of the company financing either buy or lease it's not that much harder to get one that way but you will be way better off in the long run. . then lease on to the same company if you wanted but you won't be tied to them .... (they will also treat you better because they don't have that title dangling over you ) it is possible to pay off a truck from a carrier but things change in companies and you are either stuck or lose your truck. .............. most veterans do not use the va much until they reach age 65 because of the copay on Medicare so they don't have to pay for supplimental insurance
