mc, the skills test is not trivial, at least here in Indiana. You need to have your pre-trip down cold, starting from the front of the rig, noting out loud each component and what you're looking for all around the truck and trailer.
Missing a single item can fail you, and will fail you on your air brakes if you miss ANYTHING. Once you get through that, any other of a long list is an auto-fail, like keeping three points of contact getting in and out of cab, driving over a white line, a stop and pull up coming to a stop sign or traffic stop, forcing a 4-wheeler to slow while you complete a turn, shifting through that turn...
Then you won't even get out of the yard unless you successfully blind-side tractor and trailer into a parallel parking spot. Just hitting some important check-offs...
Oh, they didn't tell you THAT??
They don't tell you THAT in Orientation!!

This is a good thread victor..
After being out here for nearly 12 years now it is easy to take for granted all the little things you learn over the years that were so frustrating in the beginning. ..
Like the delivery numbers.. I always look for one now and even know what walmart numbers are supposed to begin with. ..lol.. and also to read the sign coming in because some want otr trucks in right lane and some in left... some will let you deliver anytime and some no more than an hour early....
When I first started with my trainer I wondered how he could know all this stuff... what roads to take..what exits to use..
Where the best food was...
I think companies should have a big brother program. Someone experienced in the company you can call for advice..not a dm..Nightwind8830 Thanks this. -
I'm just curious what the hell company you went to. I'm at a company that does a half ##### orientation, well at least in my opinion, and we cover most of the items. And if you're due home time we're not going to force you on another load.
This idea makes sense, but too often gets abused. We had a handful of drivers volunteer for something along these lines but some drivers don't know when enough is enough. Calling 10-15 times per day, asking the same questions, over and over and over. At some point you need to learn to swim or drown. -
Yes Meltom..
Sometimes you just can't fix stupid ... lol
Although I remember after I went through the academy for the patrol I was assigned to ride with a coach for 3 months... during that time we were referred to as... wait for it .. "cubs"..
I was at a point where I relied on him for everything. . Never making decisions on my own until one day at an accident scene I looked around and he was gone... spent 20 minutes looking for him and finally gave up and did everything myself. . After the scene was clear.. here I sit wondering where the hell he went...I can't leave without him.. what would I tell my lieutenant. . Sorry lieut.. I lost him...
After what seemed an eternity here he comes out of the woods laughing at me... he said "I knew you could do it".. told him if he did that again I would leave this bear in the woods...
Hope this is rellevant Victor. .Victor_V, Meltom and WI Cupcake Thank this. -
No actually they tell me the opposite, I'll find out for real on the 17th and let you know.

'Mostly Drop and Hook' #2
What's that really mean??
It means when you drop your load on the yard, you and every other driver get to walk from trailer to trailer to trailer checking the same trailers over and over for an empty.
Oh, they didn't tell you THAT??Last edited: Dec 7, 2013
WI Cupcake Thanks this. -
And send you to several "drop yards" where there is a supposed empty there. Only to find nothing. Or sitting in a terminal bobtail pointed at the front gate watching for a empty to roll in like a hawk. Funny thing watching 15 guys go running to the front guard shack asking if that's a empty pulling in lol

What's that really mean??
It means no one said anything about you.
Oh, they didn't tell you that?
Aha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha... Aha ha ha ha!! -
Be home most weekends !!!!!!
Meaning: bring a load home with you and take a 34 hr reset then leave.......
Quality hometime ...????
My
WI Cupcake and RizenPhoenix Thank this. -
The worst part is it doesn't have to be that way. It was always a joy to go into a well run location that told you where your empty or loaded trailer you where leaving with was by spot number and what the trailer number of it was.
