Why should the government make a mandate to protect those who choose to not look for a better deal, thereby dumbing down the industry to the lowest common denominator? It's kind of like the Union negotiating for what they call a fair wage. They do that so everyone gets their share of the pie. Which is great until you realize the only people it's helping are the lazy screw ups that choose not to put forth the extra effort to better themselves. Those that work hard and so a great job are in effect being punished.
Have a friend that works for a trucking company that has union drivers. They (the union steward) actually gave him grief for doing his run too fast. How is that productive?
They need to mandate hourly w/ OT after 40

Because the lowest common denominator isn't just on the employee end, it's on employers as well....
why let bottom of the barrel companies drag down overall pay and working conditions?
same reason we let government cap immigration, an unlimited flood would mean too much competition and wages falling thru the floor, same goes for what companies pay and how they pay, we put controls in place to keep things from going to hell in a handbasket like they have.
Have you seen inflation-adj. pay in trucking since 1980? until the last 5 or so years, it went straight down!Coover, Another Canadian driver and drivingmissdaisy Thank this. -
I'm sure there's more than .001% of drivers that have it better than I do lol. I didn't post that to brag or anything, I posted it just to show what's easily doable. But, yeah I admit, I do have a good thing here.
However, once that becomes the norm for everyone, what I have isn't nearly as appealing, is it? When a new graduate can jump from training to making what I'm making, after grinding for years, where's the fairness in all that?
And I don't think government laws are the answer to this. I'm of the belief that anyone can better themselves without the help of the government setting some low standard that every company will make the new normal.
You mentioned immigration- that's a whole other topic I won't even get into.
Inflation- honestly I don't care what people before me made when adjusted for inflation. If it's $250k a year, big deal. I'm not getting that, and neither is anyone else at this point. That ship sailed long ago, so why worry about it? Perhaps some of the ridiculous regulations and government intervention had something to do with that.
I'm not against anyone making what they think is good money. I'm not against being paid hourly either. I just don't want the government dictating how an employer should pay. Let the employer decide. If someone is happy with their employer and how they pay, who cares? Sure, there's things I do that I'm not paid for, but I'm ok with it because at the end of the day, month, and year, I feel I'm fairly compensated for the effort I put forthm16ty and Another Canadian driver Thank this. -
Work as directed, and they leave you alone. I talk to my sups about sports and dumb stuff. Pretty laid-back. Most relaxed job I've ever had, actually, which is surprising given all the horror stories I've heard.BeHereNow97, Coover, Another Canadian driver and 1 other person Thank this.

I show up, I do my job well, I go home. I'm not being punished by anyone doing or not doing their job. Myself, I've never made a load late because I believe in doing right by a company that pays and treats me well. I like to think the majority of my coworkers are like that as well, but of course there are always bad apples. I control what I can control and go home to the wife and dogs.BeHereNow97, tscottme, Northeasterner and 6 others Thank this.

Repealing something from 1938 and letting the free market decide which way things will go is different than mandating hourly pay with overtime.
Personally I wouldn’t have any issue if they said that the exemption is going away and everyone can figure out what’s best for them.tscottme, Northeasterner, Siinman and 4 others Thank this. -
Please don't scare me with thoughts like that! Have you ever really observed prime drivers? I don't want to be around most of them no matter what speed they are doing!Another Canadian driver Thanks this.

Two fellows that I worked with in the past are now feeder drivers. The first one that went had nothing good to say after the honeymoon was over. In fact he was looking to quit after the first year. He was constantly grumbling about the UPS way of doing things. Then an old timer pulled him aside and told him " Just do it the way they want, open your wallet and let the money fall in". I haven't heard him complain since.
The other guy never grumbled much. They're teaming now out to Cali.
Nothing against UPS or any other LTL company, but I couldn't do the on call thing at this stage in life, or I'd have made the switch two years ago. With the kids being so active at school and sports, I'd miss a bunch of that stuff, and I wasn't willing to do that. Had I went there right out of school like I was advised to, I'd probably be living very comfortable right now. But might not have the life I have now, which I love.tscottme, Northeasterner, 2Tap and 2 others Thank this. -
I never said anything about Prime drivers, that was brought up by another poster. Prime drivers are governed highly, they're not hourly workers.Another Canadian driver Thanks this.

This is the post you answered and quoted!
Pity much means you think driving like them is relaxing now doesn't it?
