Because you didn't do what you're supposed to do: stand upwind of the hatch, with your back to it, when you reach over to open it.
Now with that said, why isn't the tank vapor being sent to the flare?
Thief Hatch... will it kill you in the end ?

In most cases the flare was burning, sometimes not. As Nabors was the preferred carrier for Conoco Phillips in the Eagleford, we were usually the first ones in. Additionally Nabors was the only carrier certified to haul from H2s wells. Have you ever gone to a H2s well that was surrounded by 3 fences. As the wells were new they often produced 1500 to 2000 bbls per day. The flare was not capable of disposing of all the gas, and escaped to atmosphere through tank hatches. If you opened all hatches the flow coming out of the thief hatch of the tank you were working, would be greatly reduced. As this was the early period of hauling, there were no pipelines to move the crude in from the patch, as the price of Condensate was high and Natural gas low, it was flared off or allowed to escape through thief hatches.
I don't care how long your arms are you could not escape " getting gassed " when you opened the thief hatch.

I think some don't understand what went on. No one has answered the question, If you are going to vent to atmosphere, why do I have to get gassed? It would not have taken much engineering to vent these gases away from the personnel that are put at risk. Those men that died at the thief hatch deserved better.Last edited: Aug 9, 2015

Had to open these hatches all the time to gauge water tanks in south texas. Always kept my head away and/or my back turned. I always wondered if those gases were taking years off my life, despite the fact that I tried to avoid them. Hopefully the vapors from the water tanks weren't as potent as the oil tanks?
unloaderStubby T Slapnutt Thanks this. -
The gas vapors in the H2o tank were the same as the crude tank. It did not matter which tank the crude produced into, when it was full it would pass into the next tank by way of the overflow pipe near top of tanks. The gas vapors built of quickly, this is why all tanks were under pressure, even if the crude tanks were'nt full.unloader Thanks this.
