1. Their trucks.
Hate 9 speeds. Hate em with a passion. ATS does have some 10 speeds, but the majority are 9s. Theres a HUUUUUUUUUUGE difference between a 10 speed and a 9. A 9 speed is just an 8 speed with a granny while a 10 is a 10. On a 9 speed, 8th gear takes you to 50-55 mph. If you are loaded heavy and shift to 9th, the engine will lug. On a 10 speed, 9th gear takes you to 65 mph! Every ATS truck Ive driven has had a 9. I ticked off some of the office personel when I made the statement, "Only an idiot would buy a truck with a 9 speed."
And I dont like the specs on their trailers either.
2. 2nd/3rd shift deskjockeys
Got any problems? Handle them while your FM is on duty from 0730 to 1700. Calling before of after they are there is a waste of time. If you are unsure of something, call another driver.
Had a driver, former doorslammer/new skater, call me because he weighed his wagon and was 37k on the trailer weight. He called weekend roadservice and they were looking for someone to reload his trailer for him. I asked him if the trailer wheels were spread or together. He said spread apart. I told him to run with it and tell roadservice nevermind. They had no clue.
3. Typical big fleet company
Big companies have the big company mentality. Its true. The thing that makes ATS great is they have a group of excellent, hard-working, hard-running drivers. A top notch trucker is the equivalent of 4 average drivers. But as usual, I dont think ATS really knows how to use their talent pool to the fullest. If you have a fast driver, dont pair him up with a slow FM. Dont bog down an aggressive FM with a bonehead driver either.
When a driver has a problem and tries to explain it to a deskjockey, the deskjockey doesnt really understand the driver and also believes the driver is dumb (alot of drivers ARE dumb, but thats a story for another time). They need to have a cool-head ex-trucker in the office to help with the problem solving.
I remember telling a dispatcher at another company to tell all drivers to avoid the I-10 area around the 18 mile bridge in Louisiana as the bridge was out for both sides. The dispatcher's response was, "Well, they can take I-12 to Baton Rouge!" Idiot. Every driver knows about the 18 mile bridge and no driver wants to be anywhere near that area if theres a problem with that section of 10.
4. Stupid drivers
Stupid drivers are bad for business. In this day and age of extreme rate cutting, the thing thats going to make the biggest difference is SERVICE. A shipper will pay a higher rate for superior service. Superior service will require the best drivers. One of the reasons why I feel I have been so successful at ATS is because I have surrounded myself with top quality drivers. I know them. They know me. They know each other. We have a network. These guys know where each other are and what they are pulling. They are able to keep track of where the freight is and they migrate to different areas like nomads.
Want to get into the mix? Dont be negative. Truck like theres no tommorrow. The old proverbs says that birds of a feather flock together. Its like one of those natural laws...like gravity.
You will also meet the dummies. Dont give out any info to a dummy.
But despite all the problems ATS has, they have freight. I can deal with anything issue as long as there is freight.

driver: I got a 600 mile deadhead to Iowa going to Wyoming.
Six: Are you on mileage or percentage?
driver: Mileage. My FM says that I will do better on mileage.
Six: Dude, you bombed. You just messed up on your next two loads!
driver: huh???
Okay guys, Ive never been to one of those owner operator/lease operator orientation thingies, so I dont really know what they discuss in there. When they submit a load offer to you, add all miles up. If you are on mileage, they pay you on a sliding pay scale. In other words, the longer the run, the less per mile you make. I'm not discouraging you from taking the longer runs, but you have to know when to take them.
The driver above did not know that when theyre figuring out the mileage pay, thats for the total miles. During the week, you want to look for the loads under 1000 miles , TOTAL miles (deadhead and loaded). I told this particular driver that he just messed up his next two loads because he is
1. deadheading 650 miles to pick up a load in Iowa, going to a place with slow freight.
2. looking at the very minimum a 475 mile deadhead out of Wyoming for his next load. Add these deadhead miles on to the next load and you will be hard pressed to stay under 1000 total miles. I just hope that the load he gets from here is going to an area east of Interstate 35. Take two long loads in a row and then go to California to sit and you just lost your #####.
The only time I would reccommend one taking a longer run is on Friday for a Monday delivery. Make sure you can get freight out of there. If you are not sure of the freight lanes, ask another driver. -

Coming from a small company that worked in wind energy, I've driven the biggest, baddest, and I've done it better than a lot of ATS guys I've seen. Some of the so called Class 1 guys...I don't know...I think maybe they just got lucky or something. i've seen ATS drivers to things with blades that even defy common sense.
And speaking of common sense (and you can couple this with "big company mentality") I spent 99% of last year at 175' long. I've hauled blades to ATS jobs! I've watched as ATS drivers dropped loaded blade trailers off the back of their tractors (ok, granted, it was 39 below in Grand Forks and we were all hungover racing out of LM, but still..wake up!)! But just because I have NO high pole experience I can't haul blades?! The trailers ATS uses has a loaded blade LOWER than they way we did it at the other company. The chick who verifies this has probably never SEEN a blade in real life.
That aside, yes they do have freight. I end up hauling a lot of the same stuff I did at the other place when I wasn't on Wind, but freight is freight, and ATS saved my bacon this year, so I'm grateful. Big time.
It seems my fleet manager (FM) never wants to have more than a 3 second conversation. This annoys me. Also there have been several instances where I've sent messages asking several questions at once, only to get a single word answer to ONE question.
Slow the hell down for two seconds, and read the whole message. I'm not one of those who contacts you for every stupid thing, and I realize you're busy. Yes, I did work on that side of the desk.
Also, and my biggest pet peeve, DO NOT TRY TO PUSH ME ON A GARBAGE LOAD ON FRIDAY JUST BECAUSE YOU NEED TO CLEAR YOUR BOARD. I kinda lost it on my guy the other day, because if any of you remember my Memorial Day debacle...(which was to run short and sit ALL weekend, and being my first load...) I wasn't real happy. I actually told him, "Please do not waste my or my sons time like that. I'll bounce home before I do something like that."
I ended up with a so so load, and had to add 400 miles to it to run through home, but it worked out okay. I am currently underneath my first oversize ahead of two guys (that I was loading next to) who had been here MUCH longer than me, but weren't even offered this load.
Also, my truck...there's something weird. Bear with me here, I just came out of a 379 with an 18 speed (best tranny EVER) to this thing...
The dash sticker says it's a 9 speed top 2. Best I can figure, it's a 10 speed. Or maybe a 9. Either way. the 8-9 Auto thing never happens. I have no idea whats going on. Apparently basic tansmissions confuse me. But there was plastic on the floor and seats when I got this truck, so I'm wondering if it was wrecked and rebuilt? It would have to have been hammered pretty bad, and I don't really see any bad body work, so I'm thinking maybe I'm just SO ADVANCED a driver that noob trannys have me confused...LOL...
Gimme an 18 speed any day.
Settlements are confusing as hell. If your FM issues you something called an MEC number, COPY IT DOWN. Loooong story, but just watch them. They are dealing with THOUSANDS of totally convoluted settlements every day and errors are going to happen. Period.
The Maintenance department can be a pain. The HUGE seal across the top of the windshield of my columbia is loose. Within the 30 days, I ran through the safety lane at Cloud, and reported it as "something loose on the roof". They wrote it on the work order, and didn't fix it. ARGH. I guess now that bill is mine. Again, we defy common sense. I'll probably break down and fix it myself.
Other than that, I've run my parts off since Memorial Day, and I've done good. If my first OD load goes well (and I anticipate no problems) I hope it's the start of many to come, and eventually I'd like to do hat my wife says I'd be doing already had I come here years ago, and that's to pull Schnabels ina 4 axle truck.
After 15 years, I'm tired of general freight, running all night, and want to move on. I'm banking on ATS to afford me that chance, and I'm putting myself, my wife, my son, and my FM under TONS of pressure to make it work. Otherwise, I'm going home. Whatever local gig pops up. The future of this OTR thing is not something a person like me is supposed to deal with, and I'm missing way too much of my sons life.

Can anybody tell me: Are the Lease Trucks cut? (governed). If so what's the top speed they are set at? I'm not a speed demon but don't want to become a roilling road block either!
(PLEASE, before I get a 1000 driving school yahoos telling me how I shouldn't be concerned with that and that 55-60 is the safest speed to operate a big car please know this: I've got 18 years in this racket, mostly running wide open units, hauled every type trailer and freight you could name and I've NEVER had a chargable accident, last speeding ticket was 14 years ago, so please, no sermons from the 'safety first' driving school crowd!)
Just don't want to get serious about this companies lease plan just to find out they hand you a 65mph truck, can't make any money that way, right?

Sinister, 18 spd is second best tranny. Best is 6X4. Hard to get used to, but well worth the effort. I am O/O at Andy and still am learning the system. Pulled some OD loads and been to Canada a few times. Like my FM. He is very efficient with permits compared with some places I've been.
Paul, save up a down payment, buy your own truck. If you can't live below your means and save $ you will not make it as O/O. In current market, if you like to go home much, I would recomend a payment under 1000 a month. I talked to one of our drivers. Single, young, hard worker, didn't care if he ever went home. In a year on a lease truck he saved enough to pay down on his own truck + install new tires, shocks (cab, and suspention), run rack, clean radiator, before he ever left with truck. You can make it on a lease, but you best be ready to gather your butt up and run. I just like to go home more often.

Their freight is like everyone elses. A bit slow, and the rates are down from last year. Don't know how the fleece trucks are set. Call and ask them. When I took my truck over they were willing to answer questions by fax, email, or phone.

I hear ya DangerousDave... can't go that route at the moment as far as buying, I in fact owned over 2 dozen rigs in the past, sold off the Co., moved to Fl and lost my ### in the housing crash, credit is totally trashed now, right?
Truth is I don't mind working for other folks, just a little worn out seeing all the stupidity going on in most companies these days and want to figure out a way to have at least some control over things.
Truth is I don't really look forward to having the O/O headaches again, spent many sleepless years worrying and making things work with my own company, just looking for a way to get back on the road without being subjected to typical big company stupidity and 'makes no sense' loads & routing and so forth, you know what I mean?
Just pretty much taking my time this time to try and find something/somewhere I can just do my thing, make a few bucks and not have to be at war constantly with a dumbspatcher demanding impossable things, or worse yet that lets the truck sit for days for no good reason... (having said that, trust me, I'm old school all the way, I'll push that rig around the clock if need be to get it done, not lazy at all, just don't want to lend my talents and efforts to a company that isn't going to return the effort to keep me running and profitable).

The lease trucks run 70.
Getting them serviced at Cloud can be sketchy. I got my first service done here, then my second yesterday at Speedco, and they did a MUCH better job. The were more thorough, and did things like check the air filter. Which had not been checked since ever, and needed to be replaced.
If you get work done at Cloud, CHECK IT. -
If you are in cloud, go to Truck Sales.
They are better than the shop at west.
But they also have their rules they have to follow on the "share cropper trucks."
Plus it might be faster getting the work done
