I left Jackson, MS Thursday night heading for Dallas in a driving rain storm. From Jackson to Shreveport I must have passed 30 trucks and been passed a dozen or so times. At the most there was maybe 10 of the trucks I passed that flashed me back over and out of every truck that passed me that I flashed back over (all of them), 2 thanked me. Is it just me or has this profession taken a decidedly negative turn in courtesy and driving etiquette the past decade? The customs of trucking and truck drivers seem to be falling by the wayside and are being replaced with the same selfish, "me first" attitude that the rest of the country is falling prey to. When you have to have a referee at a fuel isle to make sure drivers pull up after fueling you know something's wrong. My dad drove for 46 years, I got two brothers who drove before they passed. I'm unquestionably old school and proud of it. I just wonder if I'm the only one who notices these things or if I make too much of it.
Things that make you go . . . Hmmmmmm!

The shrinks call it the "ME" generation. Whats happened to this once proud industry is a very sad sad thing I know. U dont stand alone there brother. I too grew up in this industry and I still stand tall and proud of who I am and what I do. No shame in standing old school. Be safe out there driver.

I don't flash people over and I haven't since probably the first weeks out with my trainer. Most people know when they have passed. Take your time. Stop being in a rush. If you can't tell that you passed somebody. Stay in the left lane. Also the switch for the lights on my truck are all the way by my passenger door. I drive with my left hand. I'd have to take my hand off the steering wheel. Move forward and play with my lights. A gazillion times a day. Or I could do like most and just blind you with the high beams. Who wants all that spray on their windshield if you come over quickly. Its hard to see. Also you have crazy 4 wheeler's who as soon as they see those lights go on and off they get in right lane, because they are two impatient to wait. You won't find me in the court of law saying well he flashed me over, and I came over and took out that 4 wheeler who was in my blind spot. Because I don't flash people over. It's called cover your tail. Or some call it Donkey. Either way if you don't know how to pass. Slow down and stay in the slow lane.

In the dark, it's kind of nice to be flashed over.
I'm certainly in no rush.Knotme and TRKRSHONEY Thank this. -
I'd rather not be blinded by the folks who as soon as you look in the mirror blind you with their high beams. Then it takes about a minute to see again and then move over. Or the guys who cuts off their lights and you can't see nothing at all. You would think being flashed over would be simple, but not doing it is way better then the extremes you see most of the time. I miss the guy who would get on his cb and tell everybody you missed me, you missed me, you missed me. If his radio is big enough you can hear him for almost 10 miles. Yes its nice and appreciated but it does get annoying. I also like to watch how some are so use to being flashed over they stay in the left land for 2 miles because nobody flashed them over. Driver your truck people. It's not that hard.

Saintbully seems that's a thing of the past. I can remember going doing the highway at night and seeing truckers thanking other truckers with the lights. I appreciate it when they flash me to let me in especially in my frieghtshaker and looking back in those shaking mirrors. I know its not in the DMV or school hamdbooks but its an extra safety measure truckers looking out for truckers. There is a lot of trucker etiquette that is going to the waste side.

Personally, I don't flash anyone because I've been blinded a few times by people who think they are 'being courteous' at night. If you really want to be courteous at night, how about shutting OFF the lights rather than blinding people who happen to look into their mirror just in time to see your frikkin' high beams wiping out the night vision they sorta had a second ago. Now I have to drive down the road with your frikkin' white flash burn in my eyes for the next couple of miles.
Thanks for nothin'.
Flashing should be done in the daylight... lights out at night or no flashing at all... really, do you think I can't tell if I've gotten far enough ahead of you?... really?
'Bigfoot'skootertrashr6, 58Skylane, Dinomite and 1 other person Thank this. -
I don't flash but I do signal drivers when there clear by shutting driving lights off. All my driving is at night and most don't say thanks and the rest come over way to soon.
GAlanFink and TRKRSHONEY Thank this. -
I sinced that yrs ago how selfish some drivers are and have this IT'S ALL ABOUT ME attitude. It's not just in trucking ,it's everywhere.Think maybe money could be an issue why drivers are this way and could also be too many laws.Trucking for many use to be a carreer but now it's nothing more then a job you wanna hurry up and get your shift over with.I quit signaling drivers to get over because noone knows how to thank you.
SaintBully and TRKRSHONEY Thank this. -
If you're driving a Swift truck, you'll wear yourself and the light switch out flashing everybody that passes you. I usually only do it if the truck passing me is not overtaking me very fast and/or backing up traffic, so he can come back over as soon as possible. Not being rude or lazy, just practical.
Dinomite Thanks this.
