its for their safety, because they know they are about to piss you off, so they have you off in a distance so you cant choke the living daylights out of them

I was running empty this morning, rolled over the WIM strips on the 70 EB scale in MD and expected to get the bypass. Nope.

Officer met me on the scale, asked if he could open the door. Yup. He looked in to see my muddy composite toe boots next to the seat, and an othewise clean cab and dash, with the sleeper curtain zipped closed. Asked for my logs, so I handed him my last 7 days that I had printed off the computer (Eclipse), and told him that I could either print yesterday's for him or show him yesterday's and today's on the computer. He glanced at the top two pages and handed them back, told me he didn't need to see any more, it looked fine. Pull around back and bring in your paperwork.

10 minutes later I'm on my way with a clean level 3 on the books. And he forgot to ask to see my medical.

Be polite, be professional, and you get no hassle.

I really just dont understand why so many drivers say they get a hard time from DOT or police. Ive had 2 Level 1 inspections this year in California also had to deal with local and state police on a few occasions I have not had one single problem with any LEO or DOT officer. I was in Rancho Cucamongo one time I was parked on a gravel siding next to a railway track out front of a receiver waiting to go in to unload. They have no room on premises to wait and the cop came along and said i couldnt park there as theres no truck parking on city streets. I was changing a leaking air line fitting at the time and showed him, he was cool with that and said soon as i had it fixed to move. He asked a few questions about my big moose bumper then started talking about deer and moose hunting in canada then by the time i fixed the air line fitting i got a cell call to come into the dock. He wanted to keep talking but i said i had to go in to deliver. he was totally nice the entire time. Another time I made a wrong turn in Rome Ga and ended up on a no truck route in town and needed to get turned around, there was construction work going on and a local cop directing traffic. I stopped with the 4 ways on and he came over to ask "What the hell are you doing in town?" I just said I made a wrong turn, he got one of the construction workers to lead me out in his pick up and i followed him . No problems or bad attitude from the cop just had a bit of a laugh at my obvious distress ! Just the other day I had a blown tire on the 93 coming into Twin Falls from the south. It blew out just north of the scale and I pulled onto what little shoulder there was and checked to see it wasnt throwing rubber out. The Highway patrol stopped behind me and I walked over to his car and stuck my head in the passenger window to talk to him, he was totally cool and chatted a bit after i told him what i was doing. Just a guy doing his job , no attitude or bossyness at all. Even called on his radio to find out nearest tire service for me. Overall a nice guy helping the public. I have been overweight on axle groups, running at the end of my hours for the day etc at times of checks. I have allways found that if you have a reasonable reason to what youre doing then the police and DOT will give you the understanding needed to get on with your day.
It all starts with the attitude you have and the way you interact with the officer at the time.
I dont know the OP's situation but i would have to say if you were given a citation for not making your bed then you either seriously pissed off the officer or youre telling a BS story.
Either change your approach to LEO's or check the facts you were cited for , because i seriously doubt you can be fined for not making your bed. I'm calling BS.

The last three, I understand. Those are basic rules. But the sleeper berth not having the required bedding? New to me....

If you havent got caught up in the DOT games, you will eventually.I used to be one of those I do everything right so no reason for them to harass me,until....Now I have the attitude that I will pray they find something minor so I dont lose money or get points

Thing I'm saying is I DON'T do everything right yet still don't have problems with DOT. Maybe they consider the bedding a requirement to qualify as "Time in sleeper berth"? I don't know. I have been caught up in all kinds of "games" trucking , I'm not claiming to be a perfect driver.
