Hi everyone i need some no BS advice, I'm thinking about getting my CDL and driving OTR I'm currently a Diesel Mechanic for a trucking company. I'm still young and would like to get to travel and see the country and I'm really interested in driving. Problem is i don't know which company to start off with or how to get training from them i dont want to drive for the company i work for for personal reasons, I've heard good and bad things about Swift mostly bad from everyone else. I have a friend of mine that drives for them and he loves it. My thinkin is all companies have good and bad aspects about them, and i'm considering joining swift because my friend is a trainer and when he is home ill be home during training.. Does anyone have any advice on any other good "starter" companies for a new driver???
Thinkin about driving?

You want no BS, right? Well, stick to being a mechanic. You're making more money than a lot of guys out here are right now.
rocknroll nik Thanks this. -
Yeah i would wait if i were you simpleman. now really isn't the time to try to break in to the biz, especially if you already have a good paying gig. You say you are still young so be patient and wait for the industry to pick up again. I'm not saying don't do it, I'm just saying wait a bit. Whatever else the decision is yours to make, do some homework and talk to drivers, get the real story before you talk to the liars oh I mean recruiters.

Well.... you'd be surprised at how little mechanics make.. Don't get me wrong i like doing it but i can make the same money if not more driving. There is always this myth that diesel mechanics make a ton of money (oh how i wish
)

HAHA yeah i steer clear of recruiters i talk to more drivers than anything to get the real info im looking for. -
By the way I was one of the luckier drivers at my company there were guys getting less -
You would be surprised after you pay off you tool bills each week $100 to each tool man which is $200 a week your givin away but with new trucks you have to buy new tools after fuel and bills its not as much as everyone thinks our company has cut our benefits due to the "economy" or they could be using it as an excuse since they just purchased 1000 new trucks -

A guy I went to high school with and still keep in touch with is a diesel mechanic at a Freightliner dealer back home. He has been doing it for going on 15 years now and is topped out in pay. Like you, he started off as a mechanic for a company. Eventually it has paid off for him. He's making over $20/hr now, and even after he pays for his tools, etc. he's still bringing home a lot more than I am. Plus he has the added bonus of working side jobs on the weekends for a couple of O/O's.
