I'm looking to buy a used truck and start my own business. I have a good job currently which can help with start up costs. My biggest deal is finding loads and getting started. I've done lots of research. I've seen people I know become successful. Obviously the harder one tries, the better the outcome! Any ideas?

a lot thought goes to being a o/o. there are companies that will help you broker loads. like land star with them u pick your own loads and where u want to run but you have to make sure u pick the loads will make you money and not just break even. then there are companies that picks up loads off of rail yards have friends that does this 700wk low and 2100wk high after expenses. you have to do the right research. if you cant figure it out just sign with company. there are load boards online. but some companies are difficult to deal with. I have had 2nd party loads and I hated them. if you got company that is willing to help u. sign on with them. being a o/o is not something you should jump into with eyes closed. good luck!!!

I'm in the northeast kansas area. Looks like there's plenty of flatbed/step deck loads. I don't mind the extra work. Getting my name out and getting good contacts seems to be the key!

I can say im envious when I used to deliver to john deer and cat I used to watch in amazement the flatbed/step deck drivers when they were securing loads. that mean your a cool dude!!!!!! go for it!!! and I will remain envious of u. ill stick with van and reefer.

I've driven in the past. Mostly tanker with NO baffles. But grew up farming around flatbeds. Also drove for TMC in 2007. Secured all sorts of stuff in my day. Got to get very creative sometimes!

After going from an o/o to a sizable fleet and back to an o/o and then back to a job my advice is keep your good job, being an o/o isn't easy or money doesn't come easy either, I'd be very nervous of rising fuel costs, if they keep rising and they will life for the o/o will become even harder

Hi, if you have basic computer skills, just open your own authority and pick your loads directly from the load boards like internet truck stop. Google "own authority " and you will find many companies doing that on the internet, will cost you about $ 1000, registration of the truck and trailer about $ 1900 a year, cargo insurance $600 monthly. A good used Freightliner 2005-2007 about $23000 from Don Baskin, trailer from Extra lease, about $4000, but with bad tires, put new Chinese tires $ 2200 and you are good to go! Now the good part pick a load from the convention anywhere in west coast to Florida = about $ 5000 minus the fuel about $1500 and you get $3500 for 4 days driving.

So your only expense is your fuel??? I wonder if you would be that guy asking for money at a truck stop because your clutch went out and you don't have the money to fix it.
