Oxbow, SavageMuffin and ichudov Thank this. -
I use my trucks to do many things, but one job is to transport a forklift that weighs about 62,000 lbs. Give or take. I just did some math... With my current freightliner FLD, on five axles, I can legally carry it under a blanket permit, and I would scale under 100,000 lbs and be legal under my IL blanket permit. With a 23,000 lbs truck, say with 16,000 lbs trailer, I would be at around 101,000 lbs and ILLEGAL. I would really love to own a cool Kenworth like this, but it will NOT work well for me unless I move to a 3 axle lowboy.

It hasn’t seen 19000 in its life. Lots of stuff on there to add weight, including the fact that it’s a heavy spec tractor. If it’s got a wet kit, and if it’s a 2008 or later with a suck box, you’ll be lucky if it’s less than 22,000 imo. But what does it matter if it does the intended job well, you are permitting for heavy hauling anyway and You can get a lot of weight on that heavy front axle. In my state I could balance the load and fifth wheel slide and axle that thing out legally at 126,000. Take a look at my newest toy.

UCI have a quarterly blanket permit and it allows only a hundred thousand pounds on 5 axles. I do not think that Illinois would permit more than that on 5 axles even under a custom permit. So a truck that's much heavier than my current Freightliner FLD would make me overweight with the load that I carry around which is a forklift that weighs about 61,000 pounds.
