Hi my name is Mike and I plan to go to NETTTS (New England Tractor Trailer Training School). I have a couple Questions as I am unsure if I should go through with it or not.
I have and have always had a CT Drivers licence. I have had 3 DWI/DUI in NY state and 1 in MASS, the most recent one is 9 years ago. However my insurance co has never found out or brought it up I never lost my rights to drive in CT for that and when I do background/criminal history check I can find nothing about DWI/DUI any where. Could it be possible that there is no record of them and will a prospective trucking company that I apply to know about them?
I also have a little criminal history. Most recently I did 6 months in jail for pleading to 3 charges out of about a dozen charges. I plead guilty to Failiure to appear wich I think is a felony, Failiure to repay a refund (I am unsure if it is a felony) for a painting contract that I broke, and posesion/sale of a dangerous weapon because I got pulled over and I had a hunting knife that had a blade size considered to be illegal, this is a felony. The charges that were nolled or thrown out were other failiure to appears, a couple driving under suspension, No insurance x2, no registration x2. And I think thats it. What can I expect when trying to get hired after I get my CDL? Am I unhirable? Will I not get payed as much with a lesser company?
How long does it take to get making some real $?
What is the best way to get a job?
I wish to do regional or local. I would like to be home everynight or every other night. Do those jobs pay less?
Is it really worth it to get my CDL? I know the recruiter at the school gets a commision if I go so I'm sure he is not giving me the whole picture.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You
Hi I'm Mike and I am thinking about becoming a trucker. I have a couple questions but first here is my situation.
I have 3 DWI in NY and 1 DWI in MASS the most recent one was 9 years ago. However I have a CT licence and I never lost my driving rights in CT. Insurance companies have never mentioned anything about them and when I do a criminal/background check they do not show up. Is it possible that companies will not find them either when doing a background check? Does this make me unhirable?
I also have a slight criminal record. In 07 I did 7 months in jail for pleading guilty to the folowing charges:
1: Posesion/sale of a dangerous weapon (Felony) I had a hunting knife with illegal blade size
2: Faliure to repay a refund ( I am unsure if this is a felony but I don't think so) I did not complete a painting contract and failed to refund the down payment.
3: Faliure to appear ( I think this is a felony because I did not appear on a felony charge)
I also had more charges that were nolled, they were to my recolection another faliure to apear, Driving under suspension x2, Uninsured x2, No registratipon x2. My license was suspended because I did not appear at a summons for a speeding ticket (85 in a 65) I think. My licensw was suspended for about 2 years I think until I payed the ticket and got it reenstated in 02/09. My work history is hard to show because I work off the books alot but not all I can show a little, and I was self employed for a couple years.
Will any of this make me unhireable?
Will it be hard for me to get a good trucking job?
Should I even bother?
I plan to go to NETTTS in 11/10 any feedback?
Thank you for any imput.

No offense, but I think you've got a snowballs chance in u-know-where on getting hired by any trucking company, at least anytime soon. It sounds like the school is wanting to take your money....that particular school has not been reviewed well elsewhere on these forums. I reported a misdemeanor bad check (One instance, check less than $50) that I wrote in 1978 and the company recruiter had to get management approval to even continue talking to me. Good luck to you.

I wouldn't waste the money on school. I don't think there is much of a chance.

do not waste anybodys time.
Your record is not so good and I as an owner would say no.
I understand you wanting to better yourself.
But you are a BIG INSURANCE RISK.
Good luck in whatever you do. -
I would be really surprised if you could get a trucking job. A lot of strikes there.

you are toast...............
my question(s), why is it that every time someone is "down and out" they think that trucking will be so forgiving to them and their horrendous past.........????
why do they think that jobs ARE EASIER to get in trucking over any other industry........????
and by the by, any NUTTTS recruiter will tell you, "no problem, don't worry about it"............and you wanna know why.........??
they are COMMISSIONED salesmen. try going to that guy when you cannot find a job, ya wanna know what he will say to you.........??
"well, the companies must have changed thier policies".......... -
Good grief man.

Your right down the road from me in CT. I was looking at NETTS as well, but I decided to "run away from them". I'm looking at All State down in Shelton. I know a few guys that went there and got jobs driving 6 wheelers right after completing, and one guy I spoke with from there gave it high "priase".
as far as a record, not a chance in getting a gig, it might even be hard to get a gig at BK or Mc'd'sLast edited: Oct 2, 2010

I think you could get accepted to CR England.

cagey53 is right. I don't think you stand a chance with that record. There are too many other guys without records that are looking for jobs as well.
