Hey guys.
I'm fairly new to driving with less than a year of exp. I did otr for a few months but found it was too hard on my family. I came back local and got a job driving a garbage truck. Got really sick for two days while on my 90 day probation and missed a couple days work. Got let go. I'm exploring some other options for local and a local fuel company needs drivers delivering fuel at night. There's also a dedicated opportunity with Schneider in my area, hauling for just Georgia Pacific. I'm getting a bit discouraged and just need some advice. Should I try to get more endorsements or should I focus on hauling just van stuff for now?
Thinking about getting my hazmat and tanker endorsements ..

If you can, yes. Get them there's obvioulsy more opportunities but its not the end if don't have the endorsements.

Opens you up to more job opportunities...better paying ones.

I got my HAZMAT, Doubles and Tank to give me options to get out of the job I was in. As we speak I'm at a supermarket DC getting OT to sit in my truck and screw around here! When I'm done being unloaded I'm going home as I do every night. This job wouldn't have been an option without those endorcements.

I'm going to say no. Until you have at least three years experience forget about it. Hauling liquid is difficult for experienced drivers. Check the tanker section regarding the effects of the surge.

All endorsements are a plus, costs you a little extra in the beginning but can pay off later. In school we were highly encouraged to take all of the tests for the endorsements as it increases the amount of work you can do. There are a few companies that will hire tanker drivers right out of school so the work is there. However..... as for local fuel hauls most of the companies I have found want a few years of OTR experience and some even want a couple of years of OTR pulling tankers. I would get the endorsements (get your Hazmat also) and it will open more doors for you than just having a simple Class A. Good luck
